About Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1938, Columbia Sportswear Company has grown from a small family-owned hat distributor to one of the world's largest outerwear brands and the leading seller of skiwear in the United States. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, Chairman of the Board, and her son, Tim Boyle, President and CEO, lead the company. Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. They introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then 60 year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign. In 1998 the company went public, and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sport sandal, June 23, 2005
This review is from: Columbia Sportswear Women's Interchange Sandal (Apparel)
I have owned several pairs of sport sandals and these Columbia Interchange sandals are by far the most comfortable and best fitting of them all. The bed of the shoe is well padded and does not stick to the bottom of your foot while walking. Velcro straps throughout the shoe are sturdy and extended length to better fit more people. This shoe had an interchange feature that I really enjoyed because I feel that I am able to get more use out of the shoe rather than having to wear it only one way. The tread on this shoe is hearty and grips well over a wide variety of terrains. I could be comfortable wearing these on something as short as a trip to the store or for an all day outing to a theme park. Sturdy and well built, I highly recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sandal, August 20, 2005
This is a very good sandal. Very comfortable, good arch, and does well under water. The conversion part though a good idea makes the sandal look sort of silly as a slide, but I like having the option to take out the back strap if I want. Other than that the looks are good and the color suits me. The size fit as I expected. Don't wish I had bought another sandal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great convertible shoe!, August 1, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've never been much of a sandal person but I needed these for a canoe camping trip. It took me a couple days to get used to them / break them in but after that they were very comfortable. I especially like the fact that the heel straps come off to turn them into slides. On the camping trip I wore the sandals for 5 days straight. They were great except for one thing, and it's not major: I wish they came in half sizes. I had to order 1/2 size up and on my smaller foot it's a bit long. There is a bright side in that the length protects your toes when you walk in a rocky river. Now that I have them I wear them around town all the time!
