Editorial Reviews

With a group sound as unique as any in the entire saga of jazz, the Dave Brubeck Quartet is also one of the most passionately admired of
musical ensembles. And during the quartet's peak years in the 1950s and 60s, that passion was translated into unprecedented sales. In a
rare case of having your cake and eating it as well, Brubeck and company stuck to their artistic ideals and were rewarded with massive
commercial success.

The band was -- on the surface -- the sum of quite different parts. Pianist and composer Dave Brubeck could be a flinty, self consciously dissonant stylist; in contrast, Paul Desmond possessed one of the most refined sounds that the alto saxophone has ever known. The classic rhythm team of bassist Gene Wright and drummer Joe Morello that came together in 1958 stirred up a swinging backdrop that could cushion Desmond's lyrical flights and buttress Brubeck's experiments with atypical time signatures. Put all together, and the result was jazz that was both cutting edge and comfortably accessible.

Although prolifically recorded both in the studio and in live performances, the Brubeck quartet never released haphazard albums. Each of the studio recordings collected here was carefully thought out, often with a thematic emphasis that united the material. Hence, titles including
Jazz Impressions of the U.S.A; Eurasia; and Japan; Dave Digs Disney; Gone With The Wind and Southern Scene (both containing songs referencing the American South); Plays Cole Porter: Anything Goes! and, of course, the wildly popular, Time Out, whose rhythmically uncommon performances featured the Desmond classic and contemporary hit single, "Take Five."

Throughout the entire collection we hear a musical unit whose balance ensured ensemble cohesion while inspiring indelible improvisations from Brubeck, Desmond and the increasingly idolized Morello. As these recordings elegantly state, the classic Dave Brubeck quartet was a band of its time that has gracefully become one for the ages.

Of course, the heart of those performances is Paul Desmond, who displays the full range of his immense talents across this very large landscape.

Even if you have some of the discs or LPs already, this is a fantastic collection of the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

OK, I'm amazed I'm the first reviewer of "The Columbia Studio Albums Collection" by
the Dave Brubeck Quartet, released 6/12/12.

Dave Brubeck's music meant a lot to me since around 1970
when I was first listening to jazz. "Live at Carnegie Hall"
by the Dave Brubeck Quartet
is one of my favorite jazz albums by anyone....
(concert recordings are not included in this box set)....

What about this box set?

1. The sound is EXCELLENT. Beautifully remastered by Mark Wilder and
Maria Triana, sounds great! Vivid, realistic sound..... These were
excellent recordings to begin with and this release sounds great.

2. Contains all the studio albums recorded by the quartet from 1954 thru 1966,
for albums which were released from 1955 thru 1967, plus a handful of
bonus tracks. (The box set's title, "1955-1966", is slightly inaccurate).

3. Contains any Columbia album from that period released by "The Dave Brubeck Quartet"
including the albums and tracks with an added orchestra. Not my cup of tea,
the added orchestra, but it was a part of Dave Brubeck's music at times. I prefer
just the quartet, just the four, and by far most of this box set is just the four.

4. The booklet includes some joyful black and white session fotos.

5. Contains 19 LP-replica type CD's, so you can read the original
liner notes from the back covers in teeny tiny print. I love LP-replica
CD's, they are so cute!

6. This box set does NOT include any new critical essays, or new comments by Dave Brubeck,
or any blah-blah-blah essays by anybody, just basically just the music, in EXCELLENT sound.
The booklet includes recording dates for each album and photos, a minimal booklet.

I have been waiting for a remastered Dave Brubeck box set (1955-1966) for awhile. Finally, here it is. The performances are great. Love the remastered sound. Love the retro look w original mini record cover sleeves. One of my all time favorite quartets. Wish the box set included a nice booklet w lots of pictures. Oh well, I'll take this any day. Rest in Peace Dave Brubeck. Thank You for All the Wonderful Music.

Even if you have some of the discs or LPs already, this is a fantastic collection of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. I really love the miniature original LP covers. The sound on these discs is excellent; I've never heard better, and I have multiple versions of some of these albums. I haven't listened to all of them, but so far every track (it has title info on each one) says "2011 remaster", except for Time Out and Time Further Out, I'm guessing because these two have been remastered so many times there are already good masters available. If you're skeptical of the remastering job, check out Mark Wilder and Maria Triana, the mastering engineers; these guys know what they're doing, and it shows. I compared my original Time Out LP, which sounded unbelieveably good with my new cartidge, to this version, and they are both excellent.
The liner notes, small-print as they are, are voluminous, and mostly by Brubeck himself. These were the days when liner notes really meant something, where songs were analyzed and described in detail, so you could appreciate them even more; not like today, where "liner notes" are 5 pages of "Thank You" blah-blah. One could almost get a minor music education from the combined notes of these 19 albums, there is so much good material. My only complaint is that they are really small print (too bad they couldn't have a separate little book with all the notes in readable type).
I hope Columbia will someday do the Brubeck Quartet Live sessions (it's funny that one bonus track was "Raggy Waltz" from the Carnegie Hall concert), and maybe a complete Brubeck on Fantasy too.

I'm glad I only had one Brubeck album on cd when I bought this. Now I have a ton of Brubeck!
The Mastering of the Cd's is exceptional! Excellent, and I mean Excellent sound! And Dave was
very consistant with the quality of the music he and his co musicians put out. So even at $107, which
was what I paid for it, 19 albums is a great deal, especially with the mastering as good as it is. And NO......
The cd's are NOT mastered Brickwall style!!! The breath and have great dynamic range.
RIP Dave.....And thank you for your gift of music to us!!!! And to the Big Guy Upstairs for giving us
such a talent on this earth!!!

19 albums remastered, with some nice bonus materials, for $90, featuring one of the greatest musical combos of all time? Wow - what a remarkable value! Because Brubeck was constantly experimenting, the quality of the albums varies based upon the underlying ideas that he brought to each project. What doesn't change is the quality of the performances themselves. Of course, the heart of those performances is Paul Desmond, who displays the full range of his immense talents across this very large landscape.

The remastering gives the music a nice crisp sound. The box is a bit cheap, but the reproduction cardboard sleeves for each album are a lot of fun.

You can't wrong with this one -- it's a joy.
