"...And What A Time It Was...",
By
This review is from: Columbia Studio Recordings 1964-70 (Audio CD)
Simon and Garfunkel's five studio albums spent a total of 470 weeks on the album charts--that's nine years! As a child of the Sixties, this music helped create the soundtrack of my youth. Yes, I already owned Collected Works and I bought the box set Old Firends, and now this is part of my collection, too. Is it essential to own all three? It pretty much makes Collected Works obsolete. Collected Works had no liner notes or photos (a glaring omission corrected on this new box set). And the anthology Old Friends at best becomes dispensible. Of the 15 previously unreleased tracks on that anthology, only the eight live tracks and the two Christmas songs are not included here. [It does make you wonder about the greed factor on COlumbia's part when there are 49 tracks shared between the two.]If you have not upgraded to CD with any of these three collections, the latest box wins hands down. Each of the five CDs comes in a miniature sleeve duplicating the original albums (both front and back). The 76-page booklet contains some terrific photos and new liner notes for each album by Bud Scoppa along with the original liner notes. Lyrics are also included--except for the bonus tracks. However, it would have been nice to have a running commentary from both Simon and Garfunkel on each of the songs or at least an extensive interview. Recording dates and session musicians would also have been a plus. But the main thing is the music--and it's never sounded better than it does here! Listen and enjoy. ESSENTIAL

Finally - the complete works as nature intended,

Has this material been released before? Yes. Is it duplicated on other sets? Of course? So why buy it? Finally, after more than 30 years, the entire "official" canon of Simon and Garfunkel is released in the original form from the original master tapes (long thought lost, but as noted in the "Old Friends" box, recently unearthed). Comparing the past CD issues of these albums to these new masters is like comparing a MacDonald's hamburger to a filet mignon. The richness of the sonics, the presence of the instruments, this is an absolute feast. Of course, the earlier albums weren't as remarkable as recordings as the later albums. Once they got to "Bookends" they were creating records that were both great music as well as imaginative recordings. "Bookends" in particular is one of the few post-psychedelic records that still holds up as well today as it did way back then. Frankly, when "Save the Life of My Child" begins, you'll be hoping to save the life of your sub-woofer. And the good news - beyond the quaint reproductions of the original album sleeves and the fine booklet - is that should you not wish to buy this whole box, each of the CD's is also available individually. So...yes, it's old music once again, but it's never sounded this good. And it's fair to say that if you have "Old Friends" you have much of this, but if enjoying the albums in pristine sonic quality as the artists intended you to, this is a wonderful box set.

Touch the Sounds,
By Astrid Slomova (Louisiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Columbia Studio Recordings 1964-70 (Audio CD)
A few years ago, I reviewed COLLECTED WORKS, which at the time was the only comprehensive collection of Simon and Garfunkel's work (on 3 CDs). This is better. Much better. One complaint, though, just to get it out of the way. I love the fact that the discs have the original label design on them, but BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER was also released on the same label as the others in its first edition (I own two such vinyl copies). That aside, onward and upward. The music is what is important here. And it is given the royal treatment, beginning with WEDNESDAY MORNING, 3AM, a very good, if somewhat unassuming effort of basic folk arrangements. There are some standout tracks, indeed. "Sparrow", "Sounds of Silence", and the title track are among my personal favorites, but the rest of the album will not disappoint. With 1966's SOUNDS OF SILENCE, the duo opted for a more folk-rock approach, which has been impuned for its commercial value. Commercial does not mean bad. The Beatles were, after all, the most commercial music group of all time. No one seems to mind. Neither should they here. "Leaves That Are Green", "Blessed", "Somewhere They Can't Find Me", "A Most Peculiar Man", and "I Am a Rock" never cease to captivate me. They were well on their way with this one. Also in 1966, the duo released PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY, AND THYME. Let the opening title track work it's melodic and contropunal magic on you--it is hauntingly beautiful. PATTERNS is also first rate. In fact, very little on this record is not. BOOKENDS (1968) is, I must admit not my favorite of their collections--just a bit pretentious. Still has "Hazy Shade of Winter" and "Mrs. Robinson", though, so it is not to be missed. Finally 1970's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER carried us to the brink of Simon's impending solo career. But songs like "The Boxer", "Cecilia", and "Keep the Customer Satisfied" are strong indeed. The way the albums are released and presented here, with that one exception of the label on BRIDGE. Even if you own COLLECTED WORKS, get this. You will be satisfied. If you want an interesting presentation and better sound quality from their recordings, look here. I promise.

The soundtrack for a lifetime.,
This review is from: Columbia Studio Recordings 1964-70 (Audio CD)
This box set is very easily recommended to any fans of sixties music who do not own the Old Friends box set released a few years ago. It is not so easily recommended to those who do already own the Old Friends box set, and I will direct my comments to those who do own the box set. Overall there are ten songs that appear here that do not appear on the Old Friends Set. Four of these are on the first CD, three are on Sounds of Silence, two are on Parsley Sage Rosemary & Thyme, and one is on Bookends. In addition to these ten songs, there are 15 other songs which appear on this set in different versions than they do on the Old Friends Box set. Most of these are songs which made an appearance on the Old Friends set as a live song, but the studio version was absent. There are also a few demos/outtakes added to the Columbia box set which were not on the Old Friends boxset. Plus, some of the rarities that were on the Old Friends set, appear in this box set. Confused yet? I own both, and enjoy both, but for those with limited funds, choosing between them can be difficult. Perhaps the best answer is to compliment Old Friends with a few of the single rereleased remastered CDs, such as Wednesday Morning or Bookends (since Wed. morning has the highest number of non-old friends tracks on it (8) and Bookends is masterly sequenced, which is completely lost on the Old Friends set.)

Great music, but 5 CDs?,
By
This review is from: Columbia Studio Recordings 1964-70 (Audio CD)
This is undeniably wonderful music, among the best of its time -- and that's saying something since S&G's recorded history from 1964-70 exactly overlaps that of the Beatles. I could listen to it over and over and never grow tired of it. (Well, maybe the first CD is a bit tiresome, but that's a minor quibble.) And while I love the idea of reissuing the 5 CDs exactly as they were originally released, with the covers and labels and everything, I can't help feeling just a little cheated. I noticed each CD has about 30-45 minutes of music, even with the bonus tracks. You could certainly fit it all onto 3 or maybe 4 CDs and save a bit of money. At full price, this isn't a bargain. But if you can find it on sale -- as I did, for half-price -- then it's a good deal. This is beautiful music. Own it, definitely. Just watch out for the price.

These songs are "old friends",
By

I may be the last Baby Boomer on the block to own this incredible set of the first 5 Simon & Gurfunkel albums on CD, but listening to all five back to back for the first time in many years has been like visiting with old friends.
When I was a teen, back in 1965-66, my buddy and I pulled lyrics, chords, fingerpicking techniques and harmonies off the first three albums. Our first big performance was (needless to say) Sound of Silence as 10th graders. What's fun is to hear how Paul Simon developed as a songwriter and guitar player through this sequence of albums, including the outtakes and demos. Now, forty years later, I spend some my weekends hangin' at a local coffeehouse open mic where I hear teens singing, among other songs, some of these classic tunes by S&G. This is the collection to own. The sound clarity is incredible compared to the vinyl sitting in my garage. And it's still impressive poetry in these lyrics. Now if I could only locate my 10th grade singing buddy, we could sing these some of these tunes again as "old friends."

Where's the single version of "I Am A Rock"?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Columbia Studio Recordings 1964-70 (Audio CD)
You would have thought that the single version of "I Am A Rock", featuring a different vocal take, would have surfaced on this set after "Old Friends" had included the album version a few years back. No such luck, apparently. After shelling out for "Old Friends", I cannot justify dropping around fifty bucks for much of what I already own. This set isn't filling in all of the holes left from "Old Friends." Unreleased tracks and alternate takes are nice, but where's the hit version of one of S & G's biggest hits? Perhaps one day we shall be blessed with "The Really, Really, Really Complete Columbia Recordings" box set.

Good, but it could be better,

The remastering of S&G's work has been long overdue and now that Columbia has finally done it with all the duo's albums, it's most welcome. The "Old Friends" boxed set gave us a glimpse, but was sorely lacking several album tracks. That has been resolved with this set, but the hype surrounding its release far outsells the end result. The 76-page booklet, while reprinting the original liner notes, offers little more than Bud Scoppa's opinions of S&G's work. More substantial liner notes with an inside view of S&G's work and how it came together would have been much more appreciated. The "Old Friends" liner notes offers more worthwhile reading. The Bonus tracks are groovy, but why rehash some nuggets that already appeared on "Old Friends"? (we've already heard Fueilles-O on "Old Friends" and on Art's solo album, do we need to hear it again?!) Some of the bonus material is nice (Paul and Art busking through "Roving Gambler" is a joy) but given the meticulous detail S&G gave to their arrangements, wasn't anything else available for release other than some traditional folk songs and some Simon demos? What about the legendary "Castro Si, Nixon No"? What about the early version of "Simple Desultory Phillipic" from the Paul Simon Songbook"? Surely there was more than one demo of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" worth releasing? This song alone could have had a CD itself of its progression to an aural masterpiece. Overall, it's a tough choice between this box and the "Old Friends" box. I bought them both, but wish I wouldn't have had to. There's gotta be more unreleased stuff in the vaults and this set, while definitely worthwhile, doesn't have as much as it could or should. The handful of studio releases left off the "Old Friends" boxed set along with the bonus material makes it worth the price, but jut barely. But what the heck, it IS Simon and Garfunkel, after all. So that alone makes it worth the price! Enjoy ...

I bought this several months ago and am still happy that I did.
Before, I only had the S&G Greatest Hits and it was my favorite CD. The thing is, that every album they made plays like a greatest hits album. There are only two or three tracks that I skip over in the entire box. That's how high the quality is. Buying the albums in this box definitely has advantages. The book has a nice summary of each album and complete lyrics. The album sleeves are really cool-looking and it feels like the CDs are brand new material. The box is nice and can almost be used as decoration. These five CDs are some of my favorites. Simon and Garfunkel were true musical geniuses and every album they made is worthy of being owned.

I have loved the music of Simon and Garfunkel since I was in my teens. My youngest daughter bought this collection for me a year ago, and recently my middle daughter, also an avid fan, told me all she has are the old records, no CD's. I bought the collection to give her for her birthday in July. This collection has all the great songs as well as some I had not been familiar with but also now greatly enjoy. The booklet that comes with the set has some interesting history of the duo and their fabulous music. These CD's are my most played music! If you love Simon and Garfunkel, this is the collection for you!
