A good Start,

This review is from: The Columbia Years (1955-1985) (Audio CD)
This boxed set gives any person interested in learning about Miles Davis a good start. These 4 cd's will take you through each "phase" of Miles Davis recording history with Columbia. The notes on the booklet are good and simple. Both the music and reading material will be useful as a blueprint in order to learn more about this artist music... If you like this set get ready to spend a lot more as it will almost imposible to stay away from Miles music.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Columbia Years (1955-1985) (Audio CD)
I got this used and there are not many collections that are worth buying new, this one is. Miles' latter day stuff isn't as good as what he did in the 1950's and 60', but it still is great. Disc #1 contains: Generique, Eighty-One, Summertime and Straight, No Chaser. Disc #2 contains: Bye Bye Blackbird, My Funny Valentine ... well, do I need to go on from there? If you are looking to start your Jazz collection begin here with this purchase. If you are a Jazz fan and don't have this, you better buy it now. No one had more of an impact on Jazz than Miles Davis and his best years were when he recorded at Columbia. This 4-CD set is the best of the best Jazz musician.

Miles is just Miles,
This review is from: The Columbia Years (1955-1985) (Audio CD)
This set is proof that beyongd Birth of the Cool, Miles Davis defined the art form of what we call Jazz. Mr Davis did declare Jazz to be dead at one point and I will never argue with the muciality of possibly one of the greatest Jazz minds ever.
This specific set is precious, the works of Generique, and the redos of Flamenco Sketcyhes, Blues for Pablo, All Blues etc etc are in themselves worthy of an entire night dedicated to just listening. I was honored tyo see Miles at Constitution Hall before his death. Certainly he was nowhere near the musical master he was as far as perfformance chops, but his genius, the minimal riffs that did nore than the monster complex Coltrabeesque melodies were just put on hold. 6 notes, and you are stunned. If I could give 10 stars, I would.

Brilliant stuff,
This review is from: The Columbia Years (1955-1985) (Audio CD)
This is a terrific overview of Mile's years with Columbia. And a great introduction for anyone wanting to get familiar with his different styles. I myself wasn't familiar with his electric years until this set. I wasn't sure what to expect and if I'd even like it, as I love his older works, the accoustic stuff. But I did like it, very much. It suprised me as I really didn't think I would. And so, this is a set where you can discover new things about the great Miles, instead of buying a load of individual albums first. The 24 page booklet contains a very informative essay about Miles, and comes with lots of photos. This set is a very good place to start off a collection of Miles. It contains a good selection of his many different styles.

A great collection for any jazz fan! You get the best of everything, from his early works, to bebop, to his fusion work in the later years. It was my first Miles Davis CD, and many more have followed.
