Product Description

Food preserving has become a hobby and a leisure time activity. Gardeners enjoy freezing and canning the fruits of their summer labors to share with friends and family. The 33 quart size makes quick work of tomatoes or fruit, processing nine quart jars at a time. The high efficiency, quick boiling performance of the porcelain coated carbon steel combined with its modest cost make canning affordable. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a durable vitreous coating on a carbon steel core. It creates a smooth, hard finish that won’t burn and resists staining. It’s also non -porous so it won’t trap odors or food particles and provides a low coefficient of friction – meaning that it cleans up easily and, it is corrosion and chemically resistant so it will last a long time. When fired, the vessel is placed on pins so the bottom and sides are hardened during the firing process into one smooth laminated glass surface. You may notice slight pin indentations where the glass has flowed around the pin that supports the base during firing. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way but you should take additional care in handling if using on glass top stove.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Side Handles - potentially Sharp edges, March 11, 2009
By
R. Granoff (Southern California, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Columbian Home 33-Quart Jar Canner and Rack (Kitchen)
When we ordered this canner a few weeks ago, the picture clearly showed side handles. It also was being sold directly by Amazon.com instead of by a Marketplace vendor.

When we received the canner, we were disappointed to discover that there were no side handles...despite the picture on the label to the contrary. Apparently, Columbian Home Products/Granite Ware changed the design on this size canner to include a wide flange completely around the pot.

The wide flange would have been OK had it not had some sharp/rough edges on the underneath side. Since we were concerned that we might cut our fingers while carrying the pot full of water from the sink to the stove, we returned the pot. Amazon.com did make it easy for us to do so.

The pictures for this product on the Amazon.com website are inconsistent. Some show the side handles while some do not. Frustrating.

Note that side handles are available on the 21 quart size canner. Unfortunately, that size only holds 7 quart jars while the 33 quart size will hold 9 quart jars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheaply Made, June 28, 2009
By
This review is from: Columbian Home 33-Quart Jar Canner and Rack (Kitchen)
The pot I received was packed without any cushioning material whatsoever, so the fragile porcelain covering was chipped in several places and now obviously rusting after only a couple uses. When I pick the pot up, it feels flimsy (I weighed it at six pounds empty), and it feels like it is going to cut my fingers with its sharp edges. Despite all that, I am going to keep the pot, because I can can 9 quarts at a time with it for a while until it completely rusts through.

2.0 out of 5 stars too big, September 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Columbian Home 33-Quart Jar Canner and Rack (Kitchen)
This canning put is too big for my stove and won't even fit in my sink, so filling it with water is a hassle. The bottom diameter is 15 1/2 inches and it's 10 inches high. This is too big, and I should have bought a slightly smaller item. And having no handles is a GOOD thing for this model. When full of water it would be too heavy, and the handles would likely break off.
