4.0 out of 5 stars SEASON ONE, EPISODE THREE, April 20, 2007
The third episode of this first season, DEAD WEIGHT, was broadcasted on Oct. 27th, 1971. It's also possible to watch this episode in the DVD standard by purchasing Columbo - The Complete First Season. Jack Smight, the director of DEAD WEIGHT, is not unfamiliar to movie-goers as he directed Harper with Paul Newman in 1966 and also Midway (Collector's Edition) with Charlton Heston in 1976. Suzanne Pleshette, who plays Helen Stewart in this episode, was the unforgettable schoolteacher in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (Collector's Edition) and also starred in A DISTANT TRUMPET, the last movie directed by Raoul Walsh.

The bad guy of DEAD WEIGHT, Maj. Gen. Martin J. Hollister, tries a new war strategy by seducing, to Columbo's great displeasure, the main witness of the crime he committed. Columbo's mood won't get any better as one of the Hollister's interrogatories takes place in a speeding yacht. Finally, we'll learn a little more about the detective's family in this episode : he's got a sister who, after a first divorce, married a policeman who gave her six children, and his brother-in-law, we don't know yet if he speaks of the policeman here, is an experienced fisherman. DEAD WEIGHT is not the best episode of the serie but is still fun to watch.

A VHS to keep.
