The Columbus Book of Euchre, with 20 full-color illustrations, tells you how the game is played today - not how it was played in the 19th century, as most "Hoyle" encyclopedias still do.
The author has caught a lot of flak for his "Reviews of Other Books on Euchre."
For example, a recent "customer" review on Amazon.com (nominally signed, but actually anonymous) complained of "the never-ending and persistent effort of Natty Bumppo and/or his 'cronies' to discredit most other euchre authors. . . . look at the eight pages of 'put-downs' . . . ."
There are ten pages of reviews, not eight. What is good about the other books is pointed out. That goes for Gary Martin's, Thomas Gallagher's, Joseph Petrus Wergin's and Joseph Andrews' books.
Eight of the ten pages are highly critical, but there is no particular intent to discredit anyone. What the complainers seem to have overlooked is that the reviews are not merely "put-downs" or "put-ups." They are instructive.
For example, the following instruction and insight will be found in the eight pages of reviews complained of:
A discussion of why to go alone when you can. Pages 74-75.
An admonition to consider your position in the hand as well as your cards. Page 75.
A suggestion that it is better to play euchre by intuition than by formula. Page 75.
A euchre spelling lesson. Page 76.
Instruction on what to do with singletons. Page 76.
Three history lessons. Pages 77, 78 and 80.
An essay on euchre ethics. Page 77.
A lesson in mathematical probabilities. Page 78.
A lesson on when to trump your partner's ace. Page 78.
A lesson in commercial promotion (it's not euchre; but it's relevant in the context). Page 79.
An explanation of reasons not to "assist." Page 80.
An explanation of a time to go alone with 8 points. Pages 80-81.
An explanation of the difference between bidding (as in spades and bridge) and calling (as in euchre). Page 81.
An explanation of the rationale for not altering the lead on a lone hand. Page 81.
An explanation of scoring. Page 81.
By the way, neither the author nor anyone else at Borf Books wrote any of those "Natty Bumppo fan club" reviews on Amazon.com. Neither he nor Borf Books induced them or promoted them; and neither he nor Borf Books has any idea who did write, induce or promote them.

A good euchre book for the most part.,
By Kimberly B (Philadephia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Columbus Book of Euchre, Second Edition (Paperback)
The Columbus Book of Euchre, 2nd Edition is an update of the
original book. A lot of the material is the still the same; a sort of "re-hash" of the old, and somewhat dull, 1982 edition. However, there are some interesting and informative additions. And a sincere credit should be given for the positive features. This book does have some great strategies and a wonderful home-spun humerous approach to the game of euchre. The fact that it does not have one illustrative hand of euchre is peculiar. But then again, fancy layouts of hands are not absolutely essential to get a point or two across. Overall, it is a decent book, and I liked it for the most part. For the record, I looked at the reviews for this (newest) edition a few weeks ago, and I noticed that some of the less than favorable reviews were culled. Thus, it appears that Mr. Bumppo has a sensitivity to any negative publicity. Then we have a "cluster" of kids' five star reviews, which have the effect of inflating the overall star rating for this book. Some of these five stars reviews make the whole review process a mockery, to say the least! Finally, there is the persistent effort by Mr. Bumppo or his "fans" to continually post negative comments in forums and message boards about other writer's euchre books. In spite of all of the above, I still recommend acquiring this book, as it will improve your game. Thus, it will be interesting, indeed, to see if this review, which is honest and fair, is summarily deleted from this review area.

Worth it! Tells of 'tricks' that had taken me ages to learn,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Columbus Book of Euchre, Second Edition (Paperback)
It is good to read about Euchre as it is actually played, and the humour used adds a lot to the book. It was fun to see comments about how different states or countries (incl. Canada) play the game. The history of the game, and the derivation of the terms, also add value, as do the reviews of other books included at the back of this one. If you buy it and use it you will find your game improving, even if you don't 'cheat'. The only 'nit', and it is a minor one, is that as a desktop publishing item the pages are irregular, making it somewhat more difficult to 'flip' to the desired page.

Irreverent -- But Good,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Columbus Book of Euchre, Second Edition (Paperback)
Certainly this book is irreverent. However, it is good, they know it, so they flaunt it. There are very few euchre books in print. Of those, this is the only one that I recommend to other euchre players (about 20-25 of us meet monthly Sep-May). I sure wish more good books would come out.
