Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4- 7-- Brief descriptions of two Native American groups--their origins, lifestyles, and daily activities. Emphasis is placed on the 19th-century westward expansion of whites and the great disasters that nearly destroyed the Indians' cultures: the decimation of the buffalo, on which these peoples depended for sustenance and materials for almost all of their life activities; the introduction of smallpox that caused them to perish by the thousands; and the influx of land-grabbing, gold-seeking, profit-motivated settlers who seized their lands. For most young readers, these books will serve as adequate introductions to the subjects. Attractive and usually instructive full-color and black-and-white illustrations heighten the text. However, Lodge errs when she writes that the Spanish brought horses to Peru in 1519. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield
