Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Famed Texas Ranger Hap Walker just missed saving the Bryce family from a Comanche war party in 1870, so three years later, when he stumbles across the captured widow, Annie, he feels beholden to her. For Annie, who finds that the pain of captivity has been replaced by the condemnation of a white society that judges her a fallen woman, her remaining hope is to find her daughter among the Comanches. And Hap, increasingly impressed by Annie's gutsiness, is willing to do the foolhardy-roam through Comanche territory to help her do it. Mills writes fine, humane dialogue and makes good use of history, giving her story some taste of the not always attractive attitudes of Manifest Destiny. It's too bad that Annie, who starts out strong and appealing, becomes rather squishy toward the end, finally, it seems, being reduced to her fertility ("Out of loss and despair, he'd singlehandedly made a new life for her. And within her").

4.0 out of 5 stars Soft Storytelling Sharpened With a Bitter Edge. 3.5 Stars, February 8, 2004
By
This review is from: Comanche Rose (Paperback)
In September 1870, the ruthless Comanche mercilessly slaughtered a husband, captured his sweet wife, and abducted their children.

Three long years of grueling treatment and Annie Bryce has survived. She endured the murder of her son, watched the pawning of her daughter, violently forced to heed, and savagely made to satisfy a brutal man. No one forgets three long years of such atrocious actions.

The casehardened ex-Texas Ranger, Hap Walker, brings Annie back to the "civilized" world. However, in the hands of her so-called people, Annie continues to suffer with relentless persecution and vast criticism. Sadly, Annie survives each day filled with vicious gossip, degradation, and shame.

Mills is a magnificent storyteller. In these pages, she weaves a tale of gentle healing and understanding; yet, she allows the reader the experience of harsh survival in 1873 Texas.

Grace Atkinson, Ontario - Canada.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first ever romance novel, I just may be hooked now., September 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Comanche Rose (Paperback)
I am 30 years old and before this book never read a romance novel. I picked it up by accident. I am glad I did. I read it in one evening. Although some of it I will have to say is a little hard to swallow, the characters are well presented. I didn't want Hap and Annie's story to end. Anita Mills did a wonderful job of story telling. The next story I read will be Comanche Moon.
