From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-Likable and believable, 16-year-old Tsena, son of a Comanche peace chief, finds himself at the center of two violent confrontations with the tejanos in the Republic of Texas in 1840. Though his father counsels peaceful relations with the new arrivals, the other chiefs oppose his recommendations. At a council with the Texans concerning an exchange of captives, violence erupts, and several chiefs are killed, including Tsena's father. The remaining Comanches, mostly women and children, are taken hostage. Thus begins the protagonist's close contact with the tejanos and the deepening of his understanding that both sides have committed wrongs. As events lead to the Battle of Plum Creek, Shefelman capably juggles the political struggles within the Comanche bands, a burgeoning romance between Tsena and the granddaughter of another chief, the teen's rivalry with his half-brother, and numerous aspects of daily life and thought among the Comanches. The casual cruelty of which both cultures were guilty is noted, and the author's treatment is balanced. There are minor infelicities-the attempt to create some semblance of the speech and thought of another time and people seems at times like movie-speak; and Tsena's father and grandfather are almost flawless characters. Still, this novel is a solid achievement-involving, swiftly moving, fair-minded. The only significant drawback is the jacket painting in which Tsena looks closer to 10 than 16, which may deter older readers.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-9. In 1840, 12 Comanche chiefs, accompanied by wives, children, and tribal elders, travel to San Antonio to negotiate peace with Colonel Cooke. The negotiations break down, and when the officers attempt to capture the leaders, all 12 chiefs are killed. The other Indians are imprisoned. Among those held is 16-year-old Tsena, who suddenly finds himself exposed not only to a very different way of life but also to the power of the written word. When the Comanches are finally set free, they return home and plan to avenge the chiefs' deaths. Eventually hundreds of Comanches join the warpath across Texas. The story, which is based on two actual events (the Council House Massacre and the Battle of Plum Creek) is told from the perspective of Tsena, who recognizes the complexity of the situation even as he follows the traditions of his tribe. Shefelman combines a compelling story with an account of the history that presents both sides fairly and honestly. A glossary of Comanche and Spanish terms is appended. Karen Hutt

More About the Author

Since my father was a German professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, I grew up in a neighborhood near the campus. He read to me from an early age which began a love affair with children's books and led to careers as teacher, librarian, and writer. Books opened the door to a big world and gave me the desire to see it. Thus I spent one summer bicycling around Europe and another traveling in North Africa and the Middle East.
When I married Tom, an architect and artist, we set out on a trip around the world for a year, traveling by freighter and living several weeks in a Buddhist temple. Along the way I wrote articles for newspapers and magazines which Tom illustrated, our first artistic collaboration.
But it was not until I tried writing children's books that my career began to blossom. Our first book, A Paradise Called Texas, was a Texas Bluebonnet Award Nominee. The idea came from a story my father told me when I was a little girl. His grandfather left Germany in 1845 and brought his wife and young daughter, Mina, to the Texas frontier. Tom and our two sons collaborated to illustrate this book.
Many books later Tom and I are still married and living in Austin. In fact our marriage thrives on working together. We have recently published a picture book biography entitled I, Vivaldi, which received the Children's Choices Award given by the International Reading Association. Doing the research was a joy, since Vivaldi's music is our passion and Venice is our favorite city. We lived in the same square where Antonio Vivaldi's childhood home still stands. Tom played kickball with the neighborhood kids just as Antonio tried to do but could not because of his "chest constriction." Out of that book came Anna Maria's Gift, a chapter book about an orphan girl who studies violin with Vivaldi. As you can see, I love to write about the past and make it come to life for young readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caught Between Two Cultures, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Comanche Song (Hardcover)
It is white man's year of 1840, and Tsena, son of a Comanche peace chief, does not know that it is also the year white man will change his life forever. His story is based on two historical encounters between the Comanches and Texans, the Council House Massacre and the Battle of Plum Creek.
Although Texas history is usually written from the Texan point of view, in this novel the reader will find out what it might have been like for a Comanche boy who was there. His father is killed and Tsena is wounded. Taken in by a white family in San Antonio, he learns about a new way of life and glimpses the power of the written word.
The author has done her research and brings the past alive through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old Comanche boy. This book was chosen by the New York Public Library as one of the Best Books for the Teen Age.

2.0 out of 5 stars Comanche Song, October 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Comanche Song (Hardcover)
Comanche Song is about a young indian boy who is going through the difficult process of becoming a man. He has to decide if he is going to resolve things peacefully like his father, Chief Quasia or vengeful like his half-brothers uncle, War Chief Isimanica.
I would recommend this book for a more mature reader because the first three or four chapters I found myself looking back at the character list to keep the characters straight. There are several spanish words throughout the book in which there is a glossary in the back of the book to find the meanings. It took a little patience to read this stereotypical book.
