Old school remeniscent with new twists,
By SteelBlueRage "Who Dares, Wins" (Fort Worth TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Combat Elite: WWII Paratroopers (CD-ROM)
'Paratroopers' is a game that was obviously not marketed well or promoted because everywhere I look for a review there isn't one. So I figured i'd write one since I've played it.
A game that focuses on the Paratroopers who were mis-dropped all over Europe in WWII, Combat Elite is played with a 'top down' perspective in that way old school shooters like 'Commando' and 'Gunsmoke' were played. If you don't remember these awesome shooters on the original Nintendo then the view most closely resembles the "X-Men Legends" franchise on current platforms. The fact they did this with a World War II Era game is a great idea and Kudos to the man with that idea. Now that the intro is finished lets get to the in depth review. Graphics: 7/10 For the type of game this is the graphics are pretty decent, just don't expect to see environments like in the Call of Duty series. Remember this is a top down perspective, so for a birds eye view of things the graphics work nicely. Controls: 8/10 The controls are simple and this was a relief because it would have been easy to ruin this whole game with a bad control scheme. You aim with R2 and shoot with it as well. This sounds odd, but the R2 is pressure sensitive so when you push hard you fire. When you tap and hold it lightly a red targeting reticle comes up it will auto aim or you can manually aim by moving the reticle. This is not as difficult as it sounds, and the good thing is, you can realistically use cover and fire at enemies and if you are in the open in a fire fight you can still move while targeting. Sound: 7/10 The guns sound good and grenade explosions sound realistic. Music wise, Nothing stood out which can be a good thing or bad thing depending on the person. For this game you don't really need a blaring soundtrack. The music is just kinda there, it's not good or bad. Gameplay: 9/10 This game is fun, simple as that. You'll go through numerous missions and meet up with numerous people from other squads or your own. The enemies are plenty and they are relatively smart. This game is a shooter in the arcade sense but I won't say it's "Smash TV" arcade because you do have to watch your ammo a bit but there will always be PLENTY of medkits, ammo, and other guns to pick up from fallen enemies. The one thing that really just made this game unique is that at the end of missions you get points that you can use towards skills. Rifle skill, Pistol skill, Knife Skill, Explosives Skill and Stealth Skill. The Firearm skills (Rifle and Pistol) will make your firing rate, damage, ammo capacity, and accuracy better. Knife skills increase damage, While Stealth skills make your walking quieter so you can sneak up and knife an unsuspecting Nazi. Explosives skills increase the blast radius of a grenade and further throwing distance. How sweet is that?? Rent or Buy?? I'd say rent first, then buy. Just to be sure you don't mind the top down view in this kind of game. Overall: 4/5 stars This game is fun. Plain and simple. If you like the old school shooters I mentioned above you will LOVE this game. I'm pretty sure it's relatively cheap to buy so if you rent it and dig it, buy it. You won't be disappointed. Until next Time Sexies.... CHEERS! Brian

WWII Combat Elite Paratroopers,
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars

WWII Combat Elite Paratroopers is a far from decent game. The graphics are incredible primitive, the gameplay stinks, and a horrific, mandatory third-person view throughout the game. The gameplay is boring, the dialogue is corny, and I can't see who I'm shooting with this stupid view. As far as WWII games go you'd be much happier with a Call of Duty or Medal of Honor game.

This game would be a heck of a lot better if they fixed your view to like Brothers in Arms or Call of Duty. This game, you're physically controlling a guy and your view is fixed to a certain place in front of you so you can't see the people shooting at you half the time. There's a sewer scenario and you literally will beat your head against the wall because you're firing at God knows what because you can't see it. Not sure who thought that would be a good angle for a view but they should be fired and beaten, or beaten then fired.
Graphics are poor, guns ok. There's a feature to "turn up the blood" yet because of the poor graphics and view you never see any blood. Horrible, horrible game. Save your cash for the better Call of Duty, Brothers in Arms or any other WWII game.

Best WWII game I have ever played!!!!!!,
A Kid's Review

I had never heard of this game at all so when I bought it, I thought it would suck. There are plenty of levels to play. You can beat it in a day or two if you keep at it. I beat it in two days. The only thing that I didn't like about it was the third person view. You can't quite see everything around you but on the compass at the bottom of the screen lets you know where enemies are and when you press the fire button, it locks on to the nearest person. If you want a great WWII game, buy this one. You can only buy this game at EB Games or Gamestop. You can get it on the internet too. - Clark
