The combat medics stationed at an evacuation hospital in Vietnam saw the horrors of war, every day. Injured soldiers received in the ER were broken to pieces. Some had traumatic amputations. Others suffered from gunshot wounds to the head.
Most wounded soldiers transported by "dust off" choppers to the hospital were saved. Few had to be put in body bags. During the day, combat ER medics saved the lives of thousands of injured troops. At night during guard duty they sometimes fought off attacks by the VC. Medevac medics flew through withering fire to rescue injured soldiers. Field medics crawled to rescue the wounded.
Political leaders misled the American public into thinking the war was fought to stop the spread of communism. The real reason for the war's duration without progress toward victory was that so many people were making money off the war. Career sergeants sold goods out of warehouses to locals to support a thriving black market. Junior officers established steam baths, to service the warriors. That country sent thousands of its young women to be prostitutes.
In spite of this, soldiers lives were saved by a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and medics.
