for AD&D and 1st Edition, this is Excellent for players and DM's alike., October 22, 2011
This review is from: Combat Shield and Mini-Adventure (AD&D Fantasy Roleplaying, Accessory AC2) (Misc. Supplies)
This shield allows the player to check out their required experience to the next level at an easy glance, and allows the DM to go through the game with almost all the information they need to run a functional, balanced game without having to pause time and time again to check out the tables and charts that are scattered throughout the various manuals. The main drawbacks are the lack of a more up to date shield from around the time 'Unearthed Arcana' and 'Legends and Lore' were released. Because of this, a lot of information is slightly out of whack with the later versions of the game, and this leads to a lot of editing or adjustments on the DM's part. For those that play 3.0, you're not going to find what you need, as the armor class system and to hit system completely changed the game after being modified for versions thereafter. With a bit of ingenuity and some cardstock or serial boxes, you could easily make something that will be closer to your needs, but it just doesn't look as nicely polished as this shield. Personally, I use both a homemade and a purchased version.

Buy it for Treasure of the Hideous One, April 29, 2000
This review is from: Combat Shield and Mini-Adventure (AD&D Fantasy Roleplaying, Accessory AC2) (Misc. Supplies)
Here's an obscure product for D&D - you get the DM screen on excellent thick posterboard, and also the forgotten mini-adventure, David Cook's "Treasure of the Hideous One!" A century before, Duke Stefan was the only Mystaran ever to venture forth into the wilds beyond Luln (in Karameikos), plagued by swamp beasts and in search of a mysterious cairn, under which was buried a uniquely powerful treasure... Now, the old scroll of one horrified veteran survivor's tale has fallen into the heroes' hands, and I think we all know what happens when you dangle death and mayhem in front of a goldthirsty PC... a great little adventure.
