Combat Uniforms of the Civil War,
By K. Murphy "Fortune favors the Bold" (The thriving metropolis of Masury, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Combat Uniforms of the Civil War (Hardcover)
I was given this book by a friend who used to be a CW reenactor and have enjoyed it immensely. It is not a comprehensive guide but it still gives a good selection from both sides profiling the uniforms and arms not only of the soldiers but of the railroad workers, suppliers, sailors, and even Confederate Privateers. A number of the more exotic units like the New York Highlanders (though there was a similar regiment in Georgia the book doesn't mention it) and various Colored and Irish units on both sides are also detailed. This isn't some encyclopedia with every uniform for every unit, but it still covers plenty and it does so in great detail also telling much of their history and their fates over the course of the War, so I wouldn't consider it light reading; it could be of great use to someone with a particular interest in the Civil War, and it could serve as a painter's or reenactor's guide just as soon as a 'coffee table' book-the paintings are beautiful.

A good basic source of information on the unfirms of the civil war fighting forces and the men who wore them. Covers both sides fairly. Provides information on the main units as well as the smaller but significant ones.Well illustrated and well written. A good book to have on this subject. |
