4.0 out of 5 stars Good older text, September 5, 2005
By
Written in 1960, it is police-oriented and concerns itself only with the revolver, primarily the .38spl and .357mag. Police semi-autos weren't yet on the scene.

But it is quite detailed, especially on point shooting. It makes a useful supplement to modern combat shooting books, and belongs in the handgun-carrier's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, December 6, 2011
This is one of the practical books on policing from publisher Charles C. Thomas. Still in business, apparently, Thomas released many important about law enforcement in the 20th century, including their classic and long-selling book Surviving the Street.

Hardback with dustjacket, 194 pp, illustrated.

Here we have a wonderful vintage book from 1960 which though dated in some respects ("gimme your gun, copper"), is loaded with detailed and useful information. The blurb tells us...

"Chief Weston tackles the massive problem of learning HOW TO SHOOT WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN -- when life itself is at stake. He outlines a plan of practice guaranteed to develop top marksmanship in a limited number of weeks of practice..."

"Basic concepts of defensive fire are explained. All phases of double-action fire shooting are thoroughly covered as well as defensive directed from the hip and aimed fire from the prone, sitting, kneeling, and barricade positions."

"Fundamental principles of grip, sights, aim, and trigger pressure are summarized."

"The text is highlighted throughout by action-packed photographs and drawings (65 black and white illustrations and 103 color plates.)" Oddly, in the first edition of this book, all of the illustrations are in b&w.
