Great seat, even for a Britax-loving parent!,

This review is from: Combi Coccoro Lightweight Convertible Car Seat (Baby Product)
This is an excellent car seat. I have a Prius - and a Britax frontier booster for my older son occupying half of the back seat. The Cocorro seat is so compact, and really very sturdy. It was tricky to tighten it at first - so I took the car and seat to the fire dept. and the lovely fireman showed me how easy it was to properly tighten the seat. He also commented on how sturdy it was for such a small seat. He said there are so many people who buy really large convertible seats for small cars, thinking they are "safer" - without realizing the hazard of blocking the rear window due to the height of these seats and how difficult it is to properly install them in small cars without pushing the passenger seat all the way up front.
The seat itself is really comfy for the baby - it even has a protective pad over the crotch-strap - which is really good if you have a little boy. We have a Britax Decathlon in our other car, and I love that, but this is just perfect for our Prius and at a great price point for a very safe and sturdy seat. I highly recommend this seat and, for the price, is worth every penny!

This review is from: Combi Cocorro Lightweight Convertible Car Seat, Carrot Cake (Baby Product)
We got this car seat because we are expecting Baby #2 any day now, but Baby #1 still has to be rear facing as well. We have a Honda CRV and needed a more compact car seat than the Alpha Omega Elite that we were using for our firstborn.
After installing the Cocorro with the LATCH system, I noticed the "flip toward the back" issue that other reviewers have posted about and linked to YouTube videos. I installed it instead with the seat belt per the instructions, but my husband wasn't crazy about the shoulder strap going across the car door opening. So, I began researching. According to the [..] website, "it is acceptable for the top part of the CR (child restraint) to rotate toward the rear of the vehicle or to shift from side to side, as long as the CR is attached securely near the belt path." ([..]- look in the technical section under installation tightness). As a momma, I still wasn't super thrilled about the flip tendency, though. Just didn't seem safe. Several reviews of this car seat can be found at[..]; one of the reviews references the flip "problem" and is responded to by Combi. ([..]). I called Combi and requested the Zeus Adjustment Pad they refer to, and the customer service agent advised me that they recommend a pool noodle as a better fix. I purchased one from WalMart and reinstalled the car seat using the LATCH system. Let me tell you, this car seat is now more secure than the Alpha Omega Elite EVER was. It won't budge--not side to side and only a fraction of an inch front to back! We purchased a second Coccoro to replace the Alpha Omega Elite, and now there are two car seats in the back seat: one on the passenger side (w/LATCH) and one in the middle (w/L&S belt). The middle one was a little hard to install, but with the lap/shoulder belt and two pool noodles (because of the way the CRV seat is shaped), the second Coccoro also does not budge. I wish we had gotten this car seat for our first born from the beginning, instead of the A/O Elite, but at least he's a small baby and still has at least a year or so to use the Coccoro. By the way, I'm 38 weeks pregnant--so if I can install two car seats next to each other in the back seat of a vehicle and get them secure, you know that installation isn't that difficult if you're doing it right!

Perfect, cute, fits 3 in rear seats,
This review is from: Combi Cocorro Lightweight Convertible Car Seat, Hazelnut (Baby Product)
I love Combi products-- true genius minds at work. My 3rd child outgrew his Combi travel carrier so he is now in this convertible seat rear-facing. I can fit this, a booster seat, and another convertible carseat in the back of my Audi A4. The demo shows how 3 of these fit well in a compact car, and I believe it. I'm buying 2 more: one to replace the bulky convertible Eddie Bauer and the other for grandpa's BMW 330. I plan on having one face rear and the other face forward with a booster in the middle. The old bulky ones will be thrown into my husband's suv. Coccoro is very comfy, well built, and so light to tote from one car to another. Doesn't damage the nice seats, and easy to clean. Meets all safety standards and on the gov't carseat safety list. Looks tiny but my 3 year old fits loves it too. Cute color choices in pink and baby blue. The blue matches my combi double stroller/carrier travel set. Love it.
Follow-up 5/19. Received another seat for my husband's suv. I would deduct one star because installing the latch rear-facing was not enough. It wobbled too much so I used the should belt option. Make sure to use the blue belt clamp for a tight fit. The forward-facing is rock solid using the belt path and tether on top. I would not recommend this for trucks or suv's. It seems lost in the large/bench seats and wiggles. The bucket/contoured seats in my car allows a snug fit so I still would recommend it for sedans. I took both seats into my car with a booster and it's finally perfect.

After much research, we decided on this because of the size of my compact car - very compact VW beetle convertible :) Realize Britax #1 for safety but I think sometimes parents get carried away with things - I imagine that ANY legit brand ie Combi (and I mean high profile brands that don't have issues) - is going to be safe. Kinda like using tap water on formula, etc. - if there's no glaring prob with it, you gotta trust it's gonna be fine. So not only is this seat very compact and cute, it's also very comfy which I think a lot of carseats are not even though they look padded. The comfort is in the size of this seat - along with the infant insert, your baby is going to fit into it very snuggly. Our son was born 7lbs 5 oz and now at 6 mo is close to 19lbs. The straps adjust for height so he's still very happy in it. Giving it 4 not 5 stars because I do get annoyed with strapping: I like the strap holders but it's easy for the buckle to get tangled up frequently and the way the straps work, you have to really line them perfectly before they will click - sometimes it takes time esp. during winter, when the kid is bundled in layers of clothing and they might be screaming :) - but that's great safety isn't it. We have a recaro carseat in our other car which gets superior ratings but honestly, I think you have a compact car, this is just as great. I do agree that the install was not the easiest but it's solid once you do it right. Not sure I understand the low ratings on this seat..

The size and color are perfect. The material is nice, but it snags easily. My baby has only used it for 6 weeks and so far it's great...looks very comfortable and safe. It seems very secure in our VW with the latch system and even using it the old fashioned way with the seatbelt. I was worried that my baby would outgrow the seat before he hit the weight limit so i put my 2 1/2 year old nephew in it who is very tall for his age and he fit fine! The only thing i do not like is the buckle...you have to fit them together like puzzle pieces before you snap it in...it can be annoying.

DIfficult to install, and incredibly poor customer service,
By Andrea (Lincoln, NE United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Combi Coccoro Lightweight Convertible Car Seat (Baby Product)
After having trouble installing this seat (even after a good install with the assistance of a car seat tech, the LATCH belt would eventually come loose and have to be readjusted twice a week), I contacted the customer service number on Combi's website. They asked that I email customer service with a description of my problems, and I did. After not receiving a response, I emailed again. And again, and again. They responded to each of my emails with a promise to provide more substantive help soon, but it ended up taking 6 emails and over three months to have their car seat tech contact me. The tech had nothing to suggest other than that I use the lap belt installation, and they sent me a foam block that specifically stated that it was only to be used with their other carseat, the Zeus.
Less importantly, the material stained badly with just a little sweat from my son's head. I really liked the seat otherwise, and wish it would have worked. But as it is, I regret buying this.

We love the Combi Cocorro because it's only 11 pounds! We fly out of town with our little one about once a month, so the light-weight is what we like most about this car seat, not too mention it was highly rated in the "Baby Bargains" book. The only thing to keep in mind that if you have a tall tot (32"+) like we do, the design will not allow the tot to comfortably sit rear-facing until they're two years-old...just FYI.

This review is from: Combi Cocorro Lightweight Convertible Car Seat, Strawberry Shake (Baby Product)
I drive an '06 Subaru Outback. I'm expecting DD3. DD1 is still in a booster seat and will be for at least 30 lbs & 7" more. DD2 is still rear-facing in a convertible.
After moving DD2 from the middle to behind the passenger seat, I was barely be able to fit an infant seat let alone with the base in the middle between the two of the current seats. I bought the narrowest ones I could for them- both 16"W. Still couldn't fit the base. I read lots of reviews of this seat, and figured I could get it to install properly. It arrived and I installed RF & FF in the middle (seat belt only- LATCH CANNOT BE USED FOR CENTER) and on the passenger side (seat belt & LATCH). Took 3 hours. The worst install was the center. The 'rockers' on the bottom of the seat fit perfectly over the hump in the middle of the seat. BUT b/c the middle seat belt receiver isn't recessed in the seat and has some movement in it. It came up under the edge of the seat where the rest of the seat belt comes out. I had all my weight in this seat(160-give or take)and pulling as hard as I could and with the locking mechanism engaged on my car's seat belt, could not get this tight at all. I rolled up towels under it. Using the blue lockoff that comes with it on the shoulder belt, right by part that slides along the belt, I was able to get a decent, but not rock hard install in the middle. FF center was easier, and okay b/c the belt path is higher for the FF install and the seat belt receiver wasn't an issue. LATCH with this seat is a joke. Not only couldn't I get it very tight at all, RF & FF, a couple of nudges on the side of the seat loosened it. I was able to install RF, with the seat belt (seat belt lock engaged) and stood outside the car facing it, and pulled with all my body weight and got a good install with no lock off or clip. The passenger seat can be slid all the way back, but the seat back has to be pretty straight. FF passenger side with seat belt was a piece of cake. With this for DD2, I can use the base to the Snugride now. I'm going to do that until DD3 outgrows that seat, at that time, I'll start carseat research again and hope that the Cocorro has been improved, or there is another one this narrow available. As far as quality. Hahaha. The fabric does already have a snag in it. When I was TAKING THE SEAT OUT OF THE BOX, some of the styrofoam came unglued (and no I didn't turn the box upside down and dump it out, but even then, if a carseat is tested for accident safety, I would like to be able to drop it 3 feet and it not break, ya know?) I thought it had broken at first, and took the cover off and it had just come unglued. The other reviews that said 'styrofoam' I really hoped they were exaggerating. No. It's white styrofoam like what a computer is packed in. Everytime I leaned across the seat while installing it, I heard the styrofoam making noise and I kept thinking, you've got to be kidding me, it's going to break just while I'm installing it. I'm going to go back and watch the install video on the company's website b/c it is way more complicated & difficult than it should be. And while I'm not a CPS tech, I've installed many dif. carseats in many dif. cars over the years with my much younger brother, my sister's kids, and now my own. We joke about opening a carseat museum in our family. I know a thing or 2 about them. I was to take pictures while working on all the options for installing, but I was so frustrated that I didn't.

My husband had trouble installing this seat so I took it to the local health department office where they have someone that can help you do it. This is where I learned that had it right but just had to pull the belt tighter! That's the key to keeping it from tilting to the sides, which is the problem a lot of people seem to have. I love the seat and so does my 11 month-old daughter! It's perfect for our smallish SUV. It's also stylish and not so bulky like most seats on the market. I'd definitely recommend it, especially for families with more than 1 kid.

Don't need a minivan with these car seats,

We bought two of these for my 2 year old twins when I had a third baby. I did NOT want to buy a minivan, so when I found the Coccoro I was elated. We fit two of these and a Graco Snugride in my Hyundai Santa Fe. When my baby turns one and can sit forward facing, we'll get a third Coccoro.
I took one star off for color choices. We got one Cherry Pie and one Strawberry Shake. Both are beautiful, but the Strawberry Shake is filthy after just 2 months of use. I would have rather had a grey or other dark color that hides some of the dirt. The Cherry Pie color is a little better, since it's dark. |
