Ian Thornley moves onward and upward,
This review is from: Come Again (Audio CD)
I found Thornley before I heard of Big Wreck. Listening to Ian's former band, I heard great potential - good musicianship, catchy songs, and probably the best rock vocalist since Chris Cornell. I've fallen in love with Big Wreck since, but notice that they had a tendency toward long, drawn out, and often over produced songs - several verging on forgettable.
Not so with this album. Ian Thornley basically cut the fat, made melody king, and pushed his shockingly unique and versatile voice to the front of the mix. Most of the album pushes into post-grunge with some slow, plodding grooves, but the riffs and melodies are fresh and exciting - if lacking the sprawling arrangements of Big Wreck. I disagree with other reviewers who say this is a step backwards for Ian Thornley. This album reflects an artist who has capitalized on his strengths, and minimized his weaknesses. Above all, it showcases a great guitar player, solid songwriting, and a voice that you simply can't get enough of. Bring on the sophomore release! Recommended for fans of: Soundgarden, King's X, Earthshine, Audioslave, STP, and Brother Cane.

I am so sick of people writing off this band because Ian Thornley sounds like Chris Cornell!(Some people take their music wayyyy to seriously. It's only rock and roll people! Sit back and just enjoy the ride and stop thinking so much.) There is a great rock band here with some well written music. And I happen to like Ian's voice. I find this album to have an excellent mix of heavy and melody. The melodys stick in your head so much that you will catch yourself singing them all the time without even knowing it. I know I did. Just buy it you won't regret it.

I've been a fan of Big Wreck since the days of "That Song". I think everyone was hooked at that point. Anyway, when I saw them in 2001 at Roy Thomson Hall performing with an orchestra - yep that's what I said, an orchestra! At first I thought, hmmm it's probably some sort of unplugged thing and I was't overly sold on the whole idea; but I wanted to see Big Wreck. Let's just say, I was floored when they started playing. It was an amazing, totally kick-ass night. Now no one can say I haven't been to the orchestra - haha. Ok, so I'm off track here...simply put, Ian Thornley is one amazing, gifted Canadian guitarist/artist. Naturally, I had to pick up his new Thornley CD. Awesome!!! Actually reminiscent of Big Wreck at times; but still completely new, fresh and just literally pounds out pure hard rock, Thornley-style...the way it was meant to be played. Anyone unsure about this CD, take my advice & don't think twice. If you liked Big Wreck, you'll love Thornley. One sidenote for 'ya... if they're anything like Big Wreck, you have to see them live to appreciate this music. It's as simple as that. The CD is terrific and all; but truly, there's nothing comparable to the real deal of live music played like this. Besides, do that and you'll never take the music out of your player.
