Ian Thornley moves onward and upward,
This review is from: Come Again (Audio CD)
I found Thornley before I heard of Big Wreck. Listening to Ian's former band, I heard great potential - good musicianship, catchy songs, and probably the best rock vocalist since Chris Cornell. I've fallen in love with Big Wreck since, but notice that they had a tendency toward long, drawn out, and often over produced songs - several verging on forgettable.
Not so with this album. Ian Thornley basically cut the fat, made melody king, and pushed his shockingly unique and versatile voice to the front of the mix. Most of the album pushes into post-grunge with some slow, plodding grooves, but the riffs and melodies are fresh and exciting - if lacking the sprawling arrangements of Big Wreck. I disagree with other reviewers who say this is a step backwards for Ian Thornley. This album reflects an artist who has capitalized on his strengths, and minimized his weaknesses. Above all, it showcases a great guitar player, solid songwriting, and a voice that you simply can't get enough of. Bring on the sophomore release! Recommended for fans of: Soundgarden, King's X, Earthshine, Audioslave, STP, and Brother Cane.

I am so sick of people writing off this band because Ian Thornley sounds like Chris Cornell!(Some people take their music wayyyy to seriously. It's only rock and roll people! Sit back and just enjoy the ride and stop thinking so much.) There is a great rock band here with some well written music. And I happen to like Ian's voice. I find this album to have an excellent mix of heavy and melody. The melodys stick in your head so much that you will catch yourself singing them all the time without even knowing it. I know I did. Just buy it you won't regret it.

Thornley - kicks ass and rocks hard!!! (as did Big Wreck),

I've been a fan of Big Wreck since the days of "That Song". I think everyone was hooked at that point. Anyway, when I saw them in 2001 at Roy Thomson Hall performing with an orchestra - yep that's what I said, an orchestra! At first I thought, hmmm it's probably some sort of unplugged thing and I was't overly sold on the whole idea; but I wanted to see Big Wreck. Let's just say, I was floored when they started playing. It was an amazing, totally kick-ass night. Now no one can say I haven't been to the orchestra - haha. Ok, so I'm off track here...simply put, Ian Thornley is one amazing, gifted Canadian guitarist/artist. Naturally, I had to pick up his new Thornley CD. Awesome!!! Actually reminiscent of Big Wreck at times; but still completely new, fresh and just literally pounds out pure hard rock, Thornley-style...the way it was meant to be played. Anyone unsure about this CD, take my advice & don't think twice. If you liked Big Wreck, you'll love Thornley. One sidenote for 'ya... if they're anything like Big Wreck, you have to see them live to appreciate this music. It's as simple as that. The CD is terrific and all; but truly, there's nothing comparable to the real deal of live music played like this. Besides, do that and you'll never take the music out of your player.

Canada's finest are here to beat your @ss with their debut album "Come Again." You may not know much, or anything, about them...here in Vegas they only had modest radio airplay with "So Far So Good," and I would guess they've fared about the same in many other areas of the country. Too bad for them, and too bad for all the people who missed it--this is some great stuff.
You may have already read numerous reviews here that compare Ian Thornley to Chris Cornell. Yes, they do look and sound similar to each other. Does that make Thornley a Soundgarden ripoff? I don't think so. I've heard similar accusations toward Earshot, whose singer does sound very much like Maynard James Keenan of Tool. If you listen to the musical stylings of Earshot, I think it's a little absurd to call them a Tool ripoff just because their singer happens to have a similar voice. But back to Thornley. OK, their sound isn't real far from that of Soundgarden. Imagine a record that Soundgarden would put out right now if they were still together and picked up some new musical influences such as Fuel and Oleander. I believe it would sound a lot like what Thornley has created. That is not a bad thing at all. "Found Another Way," "So Far So Good," "Bright Side," "The Going Rate," and "Clever" are all very cool grungy rock songs, and "Easy Comes" is a particularly crunchy mosh-pit-inducing bruiser that is destined to be the favorite of many. However, the title track "Come Again" is easily my favorite song on the album. As a matter of fact, with its simple but cool-as-hell riff that just sticks in my head, "Come Again" is my favorite song...period. It has to be something special to stick out among the crowd of great songs on this album. "Come Again" is one of those fairly rare albums where I like every song, even the couple of slower songs like "Beautiful" and the closer, "The Lies That I Believe." After hearing "So Far So Good" on the radio a few times, I took a gamble and won big on this one. I suggest you do the same.

Sounds like Chris Cornell met up with Theory Of A Deadman. And that is about the only comparasion I can give them to anyone else. Sure, he sounds like Chris Cornell. He could even be the guy's twin brother. But I've seen them compared to Soundgarden and Audioslave.
No. First off, the music sounds NOTHING like either band. Kim Thayal and Tom Morello have very distinct styles. Neither one of them are alike and they aren't like this band either. So people, clean your ears, they aren't alike. What I found to be the most addicting is the way they start out some of their songs. An acoustic sounding beginning to a lot of their songs with a very eastern-flair to it. And the of course the simple yet ass-kicking drumming. You'd have to hear tracks "All Comes Out In The Wash", "Can't Keep A Good Man Down", "The Going Rate (My Fix)" among some to really get what I mean. But these songs are addicting. I can't say I really disliked any of the songs on here.

Worth the wait.,

Ever since the disbanding of Big Wreck, I've been awaiting this album with growing impatience. Now that it's out, I must admit it was worth the wait (although it WAS a long wait...).Vocally speaking, Ian Thornley is as good and powerful as ever, displaying the wide span of his voice in most of the songs. Absolutely no problem on this part. The heavy sound of former BW still lives on, amplified and louder than it ever was - that's what you get for changing band members but keeping the same band leader. And yes, it IS nicely loud and heavy, following, in my opinion, the path that was traced by In Loving Memory Of... and The Pleasure and The Greed, as the sound I.Thornley imposed to the albums got progressively heavier.

Modern rock done right,

My introduction to Thornley came when I saw them last June (opening for Sevendust). The first thing I noticed about him was that he looked like Chris Cornell. Next thing I know, he says "This next song is going to f@$% you up", and they started playing. And these guys sounded great onstage. It was enough for me to pick up the CD a couple weeks later. And I like it a lot.
The CD kicks off with "Falling to Pieces", a melodic and heavy song, which is pretty damn catchy. Now that I think of it, ALL the songs on here are catchy; whether it be from the riffs or the lyrics, Thornley's an excellent songwriter. The title track is great too. My favorite song on here is "So Far So Good", which is just excellent all-around. Brilliant lyrics, great music. They turn the volume up to 11 and just rock on "Easy Comes", the heaviest and loudest song on here. Then the next song is the melodic, calm "Beautiful", which provides a nice contrast. "The Bright Side" has a catchy riff, and some good hard rock. Closer "The Lies That I Believe" is the albums best piece of songwriting though. It's the longest track on here, and the only track with a full guitar solo; a great piece of music. The acoustic guitar in the intro/outro of the song sounds great too, and helps to make this one of the best songs on here. In conclusion, Thornley can best be compared to a cross between Soundgarden and Nickelback; just because that's about where this CD is soundwise. But it is a very good CD. Every song is well-written on here, I don't think any of them are bad. If you're a fan of modern rock music or 90's rock, you can't go wrong here. Definitely check this CD out. 9/10.

5/5 Fallen to Pieces: great opener, heavy guitars and just a sweet song.
4/5 Come Again: very good hard rock, above average. 5/5 So Far So Good: lead single, definitely radio-ready hard rock - most catchy song on the cd. 4/5 The Going Rate (My Fix): a little softer than the opening tracks, very good song though. 3/5 Keep a Good Man Down: least favorite on the cd, its good but nothing amazing. 5/5 Easy Comes: 2nd best song on here. one of the best songs i heard in awhile. very heavy. 5/5 Beautiful: slower, but absolutely amazing, should be a single. 4/5 Bright Side: dont know what to say just that its great. 5/5 Clever: stuck in my head all day, one of the best 5/5 Found Another Way: many people say this is the stand-out, and it is. 4/5 All Comes out in the Wash: good, nothing special though. 3/5 The Lies that I Believe: good song, but i dont think it lives up to the rest of the cd. overall i would say this is a 5/5 album buy it, download it, whatever u do get it somehow.

This cd kicks off with Falling To Pieces and sadly it never gets and better than that. Don't get me wrong, the rest of it isn't too bad but just none of the hard crunching rock shown in Falling To Pieces...One hit wonders??
