PreSchool-A simple, rhyming picture book with endearing illustrations. In a text reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's Runaway Bunny (HarperCollins, 1942), a wise old dog encourages a kitten to explore its world under his watchful eye. "Run along, kitten,/eager and free;/you circle the birdbath/and race bumblebee." Along the way the kitten encounters mice, a leaping cricket, and more. At the end of the busy day, the two friends walk home together. Large watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations depict shining eyes and soft fur. Art and natural rhymes combine to make this book suitable for both storyhours and one-on-one sharing. With its encouragement of independence and exploration, this title will have broad appeal with the preschool set.

PreS. A big yellow dog invites a tiny kitten to come exploring. Instead, the kitten scampers off to a nearby garden, and the dog follows her lead. Their adventure unfolds in rhyming verse delivered by the paternalistic dog, who encourages the kitten to be both carefree and cautious ("sniff every hidey-hole without any fear. Be brave, daring kitten--just know I am near"). Preschoolers will identify with the curious kitten, who, like them, wants the freedom to explore but needs the security of a caring adult nearby. Lovely watercolor and colored-pencil artwork allows pre-readers to follow the story through detailed, realistic scenes of the kitten's escapades. Two scenes may confuse little ones as they show leaves in autumn colors while the rest of the book appears to be set in the summer, but this is still a very charming story that will be popular among preschoolers.
