Come Away With Me is a highly readable novel spanning several years in the lives of two childhood friends, reunited by accident, or brought together by fate. Apart for 14 years, the two are woven inextricably together through both coincidence and choice, but not without angst. Told primarily in present time, the story interlaces snippets from the women's childhood and also from Jenny's life leading up to the present. Jenny is undeniably the main character - her sections are told in first-person, whereas the rest are third-person omniscient - but the entire cast are well crafted, rich characters with histories and motivations, strengths and weaknesses of their own. Set in London, St Ives, and the Saltings (near Hayle, Cornwall), the scenes are evocatively drawn and the landscape is depicted in all it's extreme beauty. The thing about Cornwall is it tends to become a character in its own right, as anyone who lives here can attest. This is not a quick read - it took me a bit to get into it, through no fault of the narrative, but the second part seemed to fly by - but the tempo and language make it an ideal book to read on vacation ... or if you just need a vacation!
