5.0 out of 5 stars You Had Me At "I Survive on the Breath You Are Finished With", March 22, 2011

This review is from: Come Back To Bed (Live at C.W. Mitchell Pavillion) (MP3 Download)
This is the song that introduced me to John Mayer's talents. I was familiar with the song "waiting on the world to change", but had no clue as to who the artist responsible for it really was, or what other music he had created.

One evening, I just happened to tune in to a music channel program that a promo said would feature Buddy Guy, and I wondered just what someone named John Mayer was doing "featuring" Buddy Guy.

I tuned in just as John was engaging in a bit of repartee with the audience about his song not being about a hit record, but about a man and his guitar. He started to play and then he stared to sing, and as I listened to the lyrics I was instantly catapulted back in time to a personal situation I had no idea I even remembered. I was fascinated....I was captivated....and I really, really listened. The mood conveyed by the music....perfection....the lyrics...a portrait painting, a one act play....and then he guitar soloed and jammed with Buddy Guy....WOW!!!! WOW!!!

At the end of the performance I was completely baffled as to why this song had not been a major, major, hit. Did people not hear what I just heard? I wanted more...a lot more!!

I then went on a "John Mayer Music Safari". I have heard every thing he has recorded, seen every concert DVD, attended a live show, and watched tons of live performances on the net. He is indeed a very talented guitar god and a musical genius....I have become a huge fan.

The most interesting line in this song...is part of the "come back to bed" plea...."don't leave me 98.6 degrees of separation from you baby". That line barely wins by a nose over "I survive on the breath you are finished with".

How Lyrically Luscious!!

I remember thinking....god, if my guy had fed me either of those lines, he probably would not have slept alone! To this day, this song is perhaps my very favorite...along with Gravity (they fight for the same space in my heart). "Come back to bed" really got under my skin that evening in 2009, and it is still there.

This song moved me to become acquainted with a wondrous musical phenomenon that has become a part of my special collection of greats I have accumulated over the years. These artists for me, transcend musical trends, genres, time, and space;and once I embrace them, are a part of my life forever.

For those fans of his who neglected to make the song the hit it deserved to be, I encourage them to download this version and listen to it...a lot. I think they will come to see the error of their ways :)
