3.0 out of 5 stars Curious little single, October 18, 2007
This review is from: Come Back to Me (Audio CD)
Those of you who are familiar with Ayreon, the sprawling, ambitious progressive metal opera by mastermind Arjen Lucassen, are no doubt checking out the Come Back To Me single to see if there's anything here that you won't find on Human Equation [Limited Edition] [Bonus DVD].

The answer is yes. In addition to the single remix of the title track (called Day Seven: Hope on the actual album), you get three additional songs that appear only on this single.

The first is a new studio song called August Fire which features Heather Findlay of Mostly Autumn on vocals. This is a very tranquil song that (and this may cause some metal fans to recoil) sounds very much like an Indigo Girls tune.

The second is a whimsical cover of the Beatles' song When I'm Sixty-Four that features Dream Theater frontman James LaBrie on vocals. I love an oddball cover song, and this one definitely fits the bill. It's a fun song, but otherwise not all that noteworthy (and that's coming from a major LaBrie fan).

The final track is a (shudder) dance mix of the title track. This absolutely dreadful version of Come Back To Me is almost enough to tempt me into giving this whole disc a 1-star rating. I did my duty and listened to it once. Now let's never speak of it again.

There are a couple of worthwhile moments on this 12-minute single, but probably not enough to justify the $12 price tag to anyone other than the most die-hard Ayreon fans.
