A first class piece of electronic music,
By
This review is from: Come To Daddy (Pappy Mix Version) (MP3 Download)
Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy - Pappy Mix" is a dynamic piece of modern electronic music. Led by a driving, rapid drum beat, the piece starts off fully charged and never relents. This sometimes varying drum beat is interspersed with vocal samples that give it a devastatingly haunting effect, leading to emotions of fear and intrigue. This drum beat is an electronically produced beat, modified by some processes but still distinctively percussive. Early on in the song, a sample of the words "come to daddy" is repeated a few times, which is just the start of the mysterious and scary vibe the song projects. The other vocal samples used in the piece are not distinguishable in terms of what is said - the vocal samples are more like screams, but they never the less augment the tone of the song. Just over half way into the song, the drum beat changes morphs into a slower rhythm compared to the rest of the song for a few measures, and this generates much anticipation for the listener. This rhythmically slow break is followed by a piercing, terrifying thirty-second scream. This scream is the climax of the song, but the songs ending does not disappoint. The last minute of "Come to Daddy" results in yet another addictive, albeit slower, beat overlaid with ambient clouds and vocal samples - the combination does not disappoint. Finally, it must be said that if a picture is worth a thousand words, a piece of electronic music is worth ten thousand words, for there is really no written description that can do it justice - listen to it yourself!Richard David James, the mastermind behind Aphex Twin, is long known for his musicianship in the electronic music genre. Although his piece "Windowlicker" may be his most famous, "Come to Daddy" is an important piece in terms of the historical context of electronic music. "Come to Daddy" is filled with many different loops, which include vocal samples and drum sequences. This idea of looping is an essential part of all music, including the electronic genre, and was first seen done by composer Eric Satie over one-hundred years ago. His futuristic piano composition looped over two dozen times, before the aid of computers. Yet looping is hardly the extent of historical influences in "Come to Daddy". The loops and the other music in this piece are neither purely electronic or purely from recorded samples - it is clear there is a mixture of electronic and sample-based music. This harkens back to the days of composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. It is possible that Stockhausen influenced James, as Stockhausen pioneered the combination of what were then the two main schools of electronic, avant-garde music: musique concrete and electronische music, which are sampled-based and electronically-made music, respectively. James uses the combination to create the suspenseful, dark, and haunting tone of the piece. This would not have been possible with just samples or just electronically-made music. The combination is what makes the piece so alluring. The "machine-made" aspects of the song produce the fast, heart-pounding beat which attracts one to the piece, and the layer of samples provide the dark feeling. For all the dynamic aspects of Aphex Twin and "Come to Daddy", the most amazing part is that many of the sounds found in this piece can probably be made by programs available to you and me. Although James' drum loops throughout "Come to Daddy" are really the backbone of the song, there are many programs that have drum loops, although not as complex as those in "Come to Daddy". Moreover, some of the vocal samples may have been modified through phase vocoding, which is available in many free applications. Furthermore, the ambient textures seen towards the end of the song and the long, ambient-like drawn-out scream in the middle of the song are likely simple edits of samples, which again can be done in such freeware as SoundHack. Thus, the genius of Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" is it incorporates so many historical milestones, such as looping and electronic combinations, with some simple addictive electronic processes that could probably be done in programs available to laymen listeners like you and me!

One of the greatest songs of all time...,

This review is from: Come To Daddy (Pappy Mix Version) (MP3 Download)
this song is so great. Definately one of my top 50 songs of all time. It sounds very little like the other works of aphex twin (though the drumming is very Aphex Twin) so if you love this song, it doesn't mean you'll like Aphex Twin's body of work and if you're an Aphex Twin fan... well, if you're a fan, then you're probably quite familiar with this song. A masterpiece.
