This review is from: Songs Of The Caddo (Audio CD)
When I listened to a recording of Dine and Kiowa peyote songs, one, said to be sung in the Caddo style, was indeed different. Hence, I obtained this album of Caddo ceremonial and dance music to learn more about this softer style with much repeated phrasing, sometime stop-and-go drumming, varying rhythms and with drum tremolos and flourishes. The Caddo, I found, were met by DeSoto in 1541, that the tribe, then located near the Red River of Texas and now situated in Oklahoma, were agrarian traders but eventually took to hunting after acquiring horses. This recording, made in 1975, presents seven men playing drum and singing. The original issue of 2 LPs are now on CD for 72 minutes duration. These are wonderful melodies, and the varying rhythmic patterns of dances keep the listener's interest. As traditional music is important in preserving a cultural heritage, the Caddo have much to rejoice in their fine dance music.

Southern Drumming at Its Best,
By
This review is from: Songs Of The Caddo (Audio CD)
I'm really glad that Canyon Records decided to take this collection out of its vaults and release it on CD. This collection of vintage social dances (Turkey Dances, Fish Dances, Bear Dances, Morning Dances and Bell Dances) of the Caddo features some old fashioned southern drumming at its best. Straddling the southern woodlands and southern plains, the Caddo developed a truely rich culture. Their music is especially deep and moving. This is really moving pow wow music here, and very unique too. Theres also a performance of the Caddo Flag Song. As with most real (ie noncommercial) powwow music, most of the songs don't actually have titles. But like I said, this is really good vintage southern drumming at its best. Heck, even my girlfriend said it was good and she doesn't care much for powwow music. I strongly recommend checking this CD out, especially if you have never heard a Caddo drum before.
