Editorial Reviews

4000 Limited Edition Copies

The Jackson 5 burst on the music scene like a ray of sunshine in late 1969, reeling off four consecutive No. 1 hits and inspiring worldwide Jacksonmania. They also recorded constantly, and a treasure trove of newly discovered, previously unreleased recordings by Michael, Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon and Tito are being released for the first time on Come And Get It: The Rare Pearls. Produced by Deke Richards, leader of The Corporation, the Jackson 5's original hit songwriting-production team, the extraordinary 32-track, 2-CD set enough songs to fill three Jackson 5 albums is housed in a special box with deluxe packaging that includes not only the two discs but a vinyl 7-inch single, rare photos, essays and detailed information.

Come And Get It: The Rare Pearls is rich with gems, among them If The Shoe Don't Fit, a Corporation classic that coulda-woulda-shoulda been a smash hit. Our Love, led by Jermaine, is destined to become a new wedding favorite. If You Want Heaven updates the classic Motown sound, while Iddinit, If I Can t Nobody Can and Would Ya Would Ya Baby hint at a new funk direction for the brothers. Love Trip, a ballad, points in the direction a solo Michael would take in the next phase of his career.
There are also striking covers, done J5-style, including Mama Told Me Not To Come, a No. 1 hit for Three Dog Night; Jackie DeShannon s Movin ; the pop/soul perennial Up On The Roof; a Stax nugget, I Got A Sure Thing; Traffic s Feelin Alright, in a studio version that became a staple of the J5 live show; and new versions of Motown chestnuts You Can t Hurry Love, Keep An Eye, I m Your Sunny One (He s My Sunny Boy) (all originally by the Supremes); Since I Lost My Baby (Temptations); Lets Go Back To Day One (Eddie Kendricks); and Label Me Love (Different Shades Of Brown).
Bonus tracks are: producer Deke Richards original unedited version of That's How Love Is, a rarity which first appeared on 2009's I Want You Back!: The Unreleased Masters; Richards original extended mix for If I Have To Move A Mountain, an LP track issued in 1972; and a super treat for J5 fans, the demo for Mama s Pearl, previously hidden deep in Deke's personal vault.

Come And Get It: The Rare Pearls is housed in a unique package: a 7-inch square box packed with the discs in their own sleeves; an oversized booklet featuring detailed annotations, rare photos, and essays by Deke Richards and author/professor Mark Anthony Neal; and an actual 45-rpm, 7-inch vinyl single in a slick picture sleeve If The Shoe Don t Fit b/w Feelin Alright.

32 tracks: 29 + 3 bonus. AMAZING! I'm blasting "I'm Your Sunny One, (He's My Sunny Boy)" "If I Can't Nobody Can" (so much swagger), "If The Shoe Don't Fit" (the verbal gymnastics, multi-syllablic tongue twists of adult/ relationship concepts does more than remind us of what a genius little MJ was, he is simply killing/ attacking the track. Compared to "Who's Loving You" which emphasizes adult depth of feeling, "If The Shoe..." is a much more uptempo, charming (not saccharine), braggadocious, intellectual exercise (the way MJ can turn a phrase...).

The first 3 listed (above) + these next 9 are my favorite so far: "Come And Get It (Love's On The Fire)," "Keep Off The Grass," "Keep An Eye," "Cupid," "Makin' Life A Little Easier For You," "Label Me Love," "Would Ya Would Ya Baby," "(We're The) Music Makers," "Feelin' Alright" STUDIO VERSION! yes folks, the studio version! Thats 12 cuts! This (double) disc has 32! I'm just starting to discover it all. Its so refreshing to buy a NEW cd that has more than 4 dope cuts.

Being an avid MJ fan, its hard to be surprised or impressed with "new" material. Michael, J5, and The Jacksons have such an immense body of work (matched only by the volume of books, articles, and tabloid blurbs which, for the most part, is repetitive) that its hard to think there could be anything new for them to "say" or for us to hear... Which is why I am compelled to submit my 1st amazon review (to help nudge my fellow cynics)... Clearly, Motown is like an iceberg - what you see on the surface is HUGE, but whats underneath (hidden in the vaults) is beyond... my $0.02. Enjoy!

I got this set today and am in shock at how awesome it is. When ordering it, I figured it would be tracks left in the vault for obvious reasons such as being demo's, uncompleted songs, or tracks that didn't come out well. Boy was I wrong! Every single one of the songs on this collection are completed studio recordings of excellent quality both in sound, and composition. There are several that could easily have topped the charts like I Want You Back or ABC.

If I were to try to pick my favorites, it would be kind of ridiculous because of how many awesome songs there are so I'll just say that these are all retail release quality, many single quality, songs. There is no filler.

The package is awesome. You get the two discs with 32 unreleased tracks. You get the 7' single of "If The Shoe Don't Fit b/w Feelin Alright." There is a coaster sized sticker. The booklet is large and has liner notes, pictures, and track information all in full color. The box houses everything attractively with color printing all around. And to top it off, this release was limited to only 4,000 pressings!

The only complaint I have is that the CD's come in 7' style sleeves, but they are cardboard and the way the discs are inserted will have them getting scratched in no time. I solved this issue by simply taking them out and putting them in paper CD sleeves.

If you are hesitant about buying this set, don't be. When you start listening to the songs, you'll be very glad you are one of the 4,000 people to get a hold of this stuff.

"Come and Get It" is a uniquely packaged set, containing a diverse range of unreleased material. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of most of the songs, given the most recent J5 collection of unreleased songs (2009's "I Want You Back! Unreleased Masters") was just a single disc containing 4 alternate versions of hits paired with just 8 completely unreleased songs--and, frankly, only a few of them really stand out as excellent tracks.

This set, however, is significantly stronger. Of the 32 songs included here, only a handful of them fall in to the "dud" category--they may be pleasant enough, and interesting for Jackson fans like myself, but do not necessarily merit having been released on a J5 album. The songs are presented in a somewhat chronological order, but not in perfect order. However, disc one basically covers 1969-71 while disc two traverses 1971 to (barely) 1974--one track from January of that year. Of the two, disc two is the most consistently good, owing in part to great arrangements and maturing vocal stylings of the group. This disc also features three "bonus" tracks--alternate versions of released songs, including the demo to "Mama's Pearl" entitled "Guess Who's Making Whoopee (With Your Girlfriend)"--perhaps the most infamous unreleased Jackson 5-era recording, and a treat to listen to even if it doesn't hold a candle to its future incarnation.

"If the Shoe Don't Fit" (also provided as a 7" vinyl single backed with "Feelin' Alright" in this box) is the most likely "coulda-been" hit in the set, at least from their early days. It bears stylistic resemblances to songs like "The Love You Save" and is as quintessential a Jackson 5 song as any they released in their heyday.
