3.0 out of 5 stars Pop & Dance Music At Its Best
For people who have heard Jo O'Meara's album Relentless, Rachel CD's is almost the complete opposite. Most of the songs on Jo's CD are slow, deep, and emotional. Rachel's CD is more about having a good time, partying and the music on her CD is definitely more fast-paced than Jo's album. The music on Rachel's CD is generally fast, and has a lot of pop and techno grooves...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Album of 2005, November 9, 2005
This review is from: Come & Get It (Audio CD)
A cup of Kylie Minogue, a shake of Girls Aloud, a tablespoon of Goldfrapp, and a dab of Britney Spears is the recipe to get a flawless Rachel Stevens. The British beauty returns with her sensational sophomore album, Come and Get It, which leaves the now mediocre Funky Dory miles behind. From the electro sounds of So Good, to the stunningly beautiful I Will Be There, to the sultry, dark Je M'Appelle, Come and Get It takes you on a high-speed journey through pop paradise.

1. So Good - The album's opener and second single shines. This dancey, flirty, and self-confident track was written for pop superstar Kylie Minogue, and is a disco-ish flashback to the 80's.
2. I Said Never Again (But Here We Are) - Pop with a touch of rock makes this track and instant winner. The "sex with your ex" anthem has a loud, infectious chorus and an irresistibly catchy tune.
3. Crazy Boys - A definite grower. I wasn't too fond of this one a little while ago, but now I think it's single worthy. Rachel gets an A+ on the Madonna-esque vocals and the funky club beat. (Produced by Richard X, who is infamous for loud dance tracks and clubby beats.)
4. I Will Be There - The album's big ballad, which is often compared to Heaven Has to Wait from the Funky Dory album. The track has an electro intro, and then quickly reaches the simply gorgeous chorus. Rachel's beautiful vocals make I Will Be There perfect.
5. Negotiate With Love - Most people say this was a weak single choice, but I think differently. The previous reviewer was right on target saying that it sounds like an old Blondie song. The chorus also reminds me a bit of Britney Spears' Toxic.
6. All About Me - Probably the weakest track on the album. I personally think Negotiate With Love's B-Side Queen should've replaced this one. You can tell Rachel's voice was run through a synthesizer, which is too bad, because it brings the quality of the song down.
7. Secret Garden - Secret Garden is an interesting mix of electro pop and R&B. Rachel's voice is very breathy and light, and she goes so high at some points that it sounds painful.
8. Nothing Good About This Goodbye - This is the true star of Come and Get It. The uptempo ballad has a simple, yet spectacular chorus, and will be released as the fourth single on December 5th.
9. Some Girls - Rachel's career-defining song fits in much better on this album than it did on Funky Dory. This was the start of her electro sound, and has been her only true smash-hit.
10. Je M'Appelle - With it's sultry bassline and haunting vocals, this is obviously the darkest song of the album. It's reminiscent of Funky Dory's Silk.
11. Funny How - You guessed it, another winner. The fast pace and addictive chorus make Funny How single worthy, and the original lyrics add to the glamor of the track.
12. Every Little Thing - Sounds like an S Club 7 song with a electric edge. You can't help but sing along to this feel-good, uplifting gem.
13. Dumb Dumb - This one is also a grower. Inventive lyrics mix with the Goldfrapp-esque music to make an interesting album closer.

Rachel Stevens has proved to us that she's earned her place on top of the pop charts. There is no doubt that one day she'll be a superstar from coast to coast, following in the footsteps of Madonna and the Minogue sisters. By all means, buy this phenomenal album.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Underrated Electropop Gem, November 16, 2005

This review is from: Come & Get It (Audio CD)
The second solo disc from former S-Clubber Rachel Stevens finds the singer revisiting the electro-pop currents of UK smash "Some Girls"(reprised here)with genuinely stupendous results. While debut album FUNKY DORY had its' moments, COME AND GET IT betrays its' admittedly generic title and utterly blows away that first set on all levels. The Euro-glitz genius comes fast and furious--"So Good" is aptly titled, then comes the stunning Eurotrash rock stomper "I Said Never Again(But Here We Are)", followed by a Richard X reunion on the "Some Girls" companion "Crazy Boys". Stevens breathy vocals will never be confused for those of a true vocal diva, but they get the job done admirably. Combining all the elements that have made Kylie a pop icon(great looks, genius songs, great production), it's an utter travesty that the could-they-actually-be-more-fickle-than-the-US UK record buyers have completely overlooked this fantastic album and its' accompanying singles. With any justice, this won't be the last we hear from this smart little UK pop tart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rachel truly shines on this disc, October 29, 2005

After getting the chance to listen to her new album, I gotta say that it's a truly incredible pop record! The beautiful English rose Rachel Stevens returns with her sophomore effort following her solo debut in 2003. This truly brings out Rachel's voice perfectly, with the whole album dedicated to everything from trancy ballads to upbeat glam pop.

The highlights of the album, in my opinion, are the surreal ballad "I Will Be There", the very up-tempo "I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)", the sexy, dirty basslines and London vibes of "Je M'Appelle" and the soulful but electro "Every Little Thing". Not too mention her 2004 hit "Some Girls" is also on the disc as well. And the rest of the songs carry themselves really well.

It was quoted that she was proud of this album, and she very well should be. It's a very excellent record.

Rachel's back, and I suggest giving this a listen and see for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Underrated, Completely Awesome, December 31, 2006

This review is from: Come & Get It (Audio CD)
I heard a few of these songs online and bought the CD out of curiosity. It's not the sort of pop music on which I would normally spend my money. It was a worthwhile investment. The CD is a lot of fun, with great electro-pop music. "Some Girls" and "I said never" and "Crazy Boys" are great songs with catchy, danceable and sexy arrangements. "Secret Garden" was a surprise with its midtempo beat and sensua imagery. "Dumb Dumb" sounded like it would be a dumb song, but it's great, with a chorus that sticks in memory. "Nothing good about this goodbye" is a lovely little song, heartfelt and simple. It also has an irresistible chorus, and evokes the kind of emotion you might have felt as a teen when your heart was broken for the first time, or you were separated from your significant other for the first time. In my opinion there is one track that doesn't fit, and that is "I will be there." It's generic, with nothing special in song, lyric or arrangement, although it does start nicely and builds up into a pleasantly interesting wall of sound. Even "Je m'appelle" with its almost generic R&B beats packs a surprise. I highly recommend this CD. If you're looking for something that is fun and light thematically, but still sonically interesting, this is a great option. There are no sappy ballads here! The deluxe version of the CD has a DVD with some clips, and those are fun to watch. Rachel can be a real femme fatale. Great effort! Here's hoping for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Is the water in the music industry contaminated?, February 28, 2006
This review is from: Come & Get It (Audio CD)
Rachel Stevens proved back in 2003 that she was not a shadow behind frontman Jo O'Meara of the group S Club 7 with her debut album, Funky Dory. With her first album brought a string of hits including the slinky "Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex," the 70's flashback of "More, More, More," and the anthem of 2004 that supposively saved her career, the 80's thumping "Some Girls." So with that in mind, that "Some Girls" was her chance back a top of the charts, why did her sophomore album flop?

I should retract my previous statement. Her album did peak at No. 20 in the U.K. and she had several top 10 hits and one top 20. But for some reason these songs were like something thrown at a wall. Sure, it will linger for a few seconds, but then quickly falls to the ground.

"Negotiate With Love," probably wasn't the best way to introduce her new found sound to the world. But it was catchy nonetheless with its addictive chorus (The case is closed/ I don't negotiate with love). So it was no wonder that it was able to peak at No. 10. But the follow-up "So Good," the catchy as hell break up anthem was stunning! Her sexy low key vocals with it's thumping beats should have made this a No. 1 smash and gave her the limelight she deserves overseas as well. Unfortunately, it stalled at No. 9. Rachel continues with her singles and brings us the rockin' 80's sex with your ex track, "I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)." This song is nothing short of spectacular and should have given her album it's pole position peak it deserved. How can one resist the lyrics "I said no no never, we don't go together, no, I really couldn't take anymore. Now it's two weeks later, I feel such a traitor, I let you in my back door." Where Funky Dory lagged with it's musical quality and cliched lyrics, Come and Get It prevails beautifully.

Hopefully the music industry will pick up on this diamond in the rough and she will finally get the attention she deserves. And why not? Her vocals are mezmerizing on the beautiful ballad "I Will Be There," or her arguably best track on the album, "Nothing Good About This Goodbye."

Rachel asked for people to come and get this album. But apparently people haven't gotten the earwax out of their ears and picked it up. When will they learn?

5.0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with Rachel Stevens?, January 17, 2006

Sincerely Me (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Come & Get It (Audio CD)
I'm a married female in my mid-30's. I'm way past my "pop prime". And I'm not even an audiophile wannabe's wannabe assistant. But my music tastes are definitely diverse, and I know a good sound when I hear it.

I stumbled upon Rachel's music completely by accident and ended up purchasing an imported copy of this CD approximately two months ago because I loved what I heard. Frankly, when you consider what's being played on pop stations here, I'm shocked that Rachel is not (yet) big in the U.S. The CD is well-produced, and Rachel is both beautiful and sexy. She certainly has what it takes to be a household name.

I Said Never Again and Some Girls are my two favorite songs from this CD. Give it a shot. It's great. Really!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of Brilliant, October 29, 2005
This review is from: Come & Get It (Audio CD)
Former S Club memner Rachel Steven's returns with her sophomore album "Come and Get it". While the album's singles "Negotiate with love", "so good" and "i said never again (But here we are)" frustratingly failed to be the major pop hits they should have been they indicative of the synth heavy, dancefloor ready album that Rachel has crafted.

80s New wave and Electro are the two main sounds that dominate the album. Here is a track by track review.

01 So Good - Electro heavy dancefloor stomper. This was the second single and made UK #10.

02 I said never again (but here we are)- A fantastic upbeat pop track. Opening up with a shouty bit "One! Two! Three! Four!" this song should have done better than UK #12. Im stunned this track didnt catch on.

03 CRazy Boys- Richard X produced this track which is somewhat of a departure from his trademark club sound. The track here features a chugging beat and a escalating erasure sounding keyboard. Rumoured to be the 4th single.

04. I will be there - The albums ballad if it can be called that. Opening with an electronic beat and a analog sounding keyboard the song plods along until it explodes into the chorus in which Rachels sings "Is it okay if I meet you in Heaven? Is it alright if Im with you forever?" all awash in layers of beautiful synths and the ever perisistant beat. Gorgeous!

05. Negotiate with Love - The album's first single and arguable one of the weakest tracks. The song scrapped into the UK top ten but failed to do it job of getting people excited about the new project. The song sounds like an old Blondie track complete with new wave keyboards and a little guitar thrown in. A great album track but probably a poor single choice.

06. Its all about Me - Rachel singles about a broken realationship on a track that could have easily been a throwaway track from her "funky dory" album. I dont know why but it sounds like there is a Cure sample in this song. An okay song.

07.Secret Garden - In a weird high pitched voice Rachel gets retro 80s on this track. The music sounding like a bit like Dannii Minogue on her Neon Nights album complete with a keyboard bit ripped from Parliament Funkadelic.

08. Nothing Good about this Goodbye - Arguably the standout track on the album. Rachel is once again in Electroclash land again but the chorus is so damn catchy its hard to ignore. Her vocals sound slightly altered but it all works. With its cool club sounds and great synths this song is worth buying the album. Should be a single.

09. Some Girls - The Richard X track that many claim "Saved" rachel's career (although now it may look like it just postponed the inevitable). A huge hit in the UK it sounds like the DR Who theme song mixed with harsh beats underneath it. AWESOME!

10. Je M'apelle - A rather boring track that could easily have been a Britney Spears song. A hip-hoppish beat and some flat vocals make this one of the leats interesting songs on the album.

11. Funny How - Cool electronic noises and a steady beat make this a fun pop song. The chorus reminds me a bit of Pet Shop Boy's "I'm not scared". Rachel sings "The night got cold, its almost three-take these fools away from me" which is reminds me of "take thse dogs away from me" on the PSB songs. A good song.

12.Every Little THing - This song sounds like an S Club song (think "You" or "Natural") with a slightly clubbier edge to it.

13.Dumb Dumb - Opening up with a sample of M.A>R.R.S. collosal 80's dance hit "Pump up the Volume" a cool beat and synths come in to make this a fun new wave sounding song. The title "dumb dumb" is actually kinda cool as the chorus goes "And all she wants is dum de de dum" which could either be nonsensical lyrics or the word dumb repeated over and over.

Overall a solid album and one that should have done better than it has. Fans of great pop music would defiently enjoy this- a brilliant album for thos whole like upbeat dance-pop.

I have I do not know how many albums of music, but this one has something not many others do and that is zest. When you listen to a song that has something of a mellow beat it calms you down but this album when you listen to one of its mellow songs, it is still upbeat and happy. I would recomend this album to anyone who wants to listen to music that is upbeat and fun.

Rachel was always said to be the prettiest of S club, and she's nice and can sing. Perfect girl? Maybe. Most of these songs I feel like its good but in S club, her voice had more of a range. I do enjoy listening to this album. Its really good.

This CD is a masterpiece of synthesizers and melody. Tracks such as So Good, Crazy Boys and Some Girls are mesmerizing. The CD should have been a huge seller and hopefully it isn't too late for people to purchase it and enjoy it. Earlier in 2010 it was announced that Rachel Stevens was recording again. Hopefully she won't stray from the style of this CD using some of the same writers and producers. Treat yourself and buy this CD.
