Great Introduction to Pope Benedict's Focus on Christ, April 2, 2010
This review is from: Come Meet Jesus: An Invitation from Pope Benedict XVI (Paperback)
I have been a fan of Amy Welborn for 8 years, ever since I discovered what I believe was the first iteration of her several blogs. Amy just gets "it," by which I mean she understands the Christian life as an adventure. She understands as Benedict has written that "Christianity is not an intellectual system, a packet of dogmas, a moralism," but, rather, "an encounter, a love story; it is an event." This means, as Benedict has written, that being "Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction." Amy realizes that that encounter changes everything and calls us to live at the heart of the world, engaging and loving our culture while offering witness and gentle critique.
No where is Amy's "getting it" more evident than in this great little book Come Meet Jesus. In this short, but wonderfully rich book, Amy guides us through various aspects of where Pope Benedict is calling us to meet Christ. Benedict is claiming that we meet Christ in all things -- our God was made flesh and therefore all, everything, is touched by him and he is reaching out to meet us here and now (to borrow a phrase from another of Amy's books). In this book Amy beautifully weaves Benedict's words into various themes, such as meeting Christ in liturgy, prayer, everyday life, and in suffering and death. She presents this so well and picks out just incredible texts from the Holy Father.
Furthermore, Amy does a good job of giving a small glimpse into the person of Pope Benedict. She has nice nuggets including that when a theology professor, Benedict would read his lectures to his sister to gauge whether they were understandable and ready for his classroom.
I wish I were a millionaire because I'd buy thousands of copies of this very readable and beautiful book and hand them out in parishes across this nation to give Catholics an introduction to Benedict. In fact, in many ways this book is perfect for those wanting to know Benedict and Jesus better and for those coming into the Church. It would make a great book for RCIA or for catechumens that you know.
Amy Welborn is a gift to the Church and with this book she proves it yet again. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Great easy read, February 23, 2010
This review is from: Come Meet Jesus: An Invitation from Pope Benedict XVI (Paperback)
Amy! Great job!
I heard about this book and thought that the Pope had written it, so I almost didn't buy it when I saw it was a compilation of his work by another. I am so glad I purchased it! Amy Welborn has done an outstanding job categorizing many of Pope Benedict's works. She has created a condensed "this is what our Holy Father is teaching us" source, and by giving us such long quotes of his, I have no concern that she is excerpting his words and works out of context to fit her own agenda. For all of those who are very busy people but want to understand our faith in the midst of the culture and world we live in, this is a wonderful "diving board."
Thank you for making my job of knowing what the Holy Father longs to convey easier!
