Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The come-from-nowhere success of Shania Twain's previous album, The Woman in Me, proved that the world was ready for a combination of traditional instruments, girl-power themes, and dance-pop dynamics. Whether Twain is a modern-day Dolly Parton or a country music Spice Girl is a matter of perspective. But with her third album, she accentuates the sing-along choruses and simple dance rhythms while downplaying the country elements. As a pop move, it works wonderfully for her, earning Twain a valued spot on MTV, VH-1, and pop radio. The emphasis is on fun rather than depth, of course. But no one can accuse her of being stingy: she and her Svengali-like producer/husband, slick-rock king Robert "Mutt" Lange (Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC), load down the album with 16 songs, all of them quite radio-friendly. --Michael McCall

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally someone got it right November 24, 1999
Format:Audio CD
One of my biggest pet peeves in music is the increasing trend to do two or more versions of a song. Often, you'd hear a catchier, dancier pop "radio edit" of a song and find the mix on the album to be less appealing, sometimes to the extreme of sounding like a completely different song. It was for this reason that I had avoided Shania's "Come On Over" release, since I liked what I heard on the radio, but disliked the "country mixes" I heard while sampling her original CD. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that her record company has come to thier senses and released this "International Version" to compensate for those of us that prefer the remixed pop Shania. From "Don't Impress Me Much" and "From this Moment On" I realize she's had 4 successful singles from this album, and they're all here--for less than the price of buying one import single containing any of these mixes. If you're like me and resisted the original, buy this one--you won't be disappointed!

I've never been a huge fan of country music. But I remember the first time i heard "you're still the one" i went crazy. The song is completely moving. A couple weeks went by and i was flipping thru the T.V. and heard "That don't impress me much". I told my wife, hey now there are 2 different singers (country) that I like. When the video ended it said it was Shania Twain. I was absolutely floored. A couple weeks later I was listening to a pop station and heard "from this moment". I didn't know who did it, when I found out it was Shania I finally decided to go get the CD. This album is full of great rock, country and pop.

Shania has a very tasteful voice and Mutt Lange is one over the top producer. If you like variety in your music you gotta pick this up. She pulls of a Bonnie Raitt style tune with "If you wanna touch her ask" and you can hear a Blondie influence on "When". She pulls out some great southern rock meets bryan adams on "Whatever you do! don't!".

The vocal melodies on this album are the best i've heard in a long time. Shania can take a pop tune "From this moment" and pull off a Mariah with ease and quite a bit more style.

If you buy one CD this year, make it this one! there isn't a bad song on this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not very country, but good provocative pop June 28, 2002
Format:Audio CD
I like country and I like the real country, Dolly, Loretta, Tammy, etc. But I like good adult contemporary music too. This is just to let you know where I'm coming from. Country purists won't care for this. But those who don't mind crossover which leans much more to a rather seductive pop sound than traditional country will go for it.

For my money, "From This Moment On" is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. It has a delicacy, and yet a powerful emotional build-up. Then there's the upbeat "Man,I Feel Like a Woman!" Nothing subtle here! "You're Still The One" has the beat, the energy, but not the annoying loudness that a certain other pop/country singer overdoes. "That Don't Impress Me Much" is a bit more country than some of these that have received a lot of radio play. And "Rock This Country" speaks for itself.

If you like Shania, you should really like this CD. If you don't, well, that's the way it goes.
