Today's country hits a new low,

Just when I thought mainstream country couldn't possibly get any worse, along came Jessica Simpson to prove me wrong. Simpson's highly publicized genre change from pop to country is an attempt to revive her flagging recording career. Her manager-father Joe Simpson explain the switch: " ...everything in the music business, especially pop music, has moved away from singers. And I think country is the only pure, storytelling kind of genre left." This explanation raises more questions than it answers. If storytelling is so important to Simpson, then one wonders why she chose for her debut a fluff-piece like "Come On Over", which not only has no story to tell, it doesn't say much of anything at all. I can't remember the last time I heard lyrics as inane as, "Leave the dishes in the sink, leave the ice cubes in your drink, just come on over."
Over the past few years Simpson has become, with some justification, somewhat of a laughing stock. If she really loved country music as she claims, and wanted to be taken seriously as an artist, then surely there must have been better material to choose from than this piece of radio fodder, which is little more than a booty call with an in-your-face steel guitar arrangement -- just in case we missed the fact that this is supposed to be a country song. So what do we have? A beautiful blonde celebrity and a dreadful, insipid song that says nothing. Sounds like a sure-fire hit , as Jessica Simpson takes her place alongside Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, ensuring that Blonde Pop Tart continues to be the flavor of the month a while longer on Today's Country Radio.

I've been a fan of Jessica's ever since her first song (I Wanna Love You Forever), way before Newlyweds etc. I think her voice is great and powerful, and just because she's tried Country music, she hasn't lost her touch. In fact, her voice really suits this song.
It's a boppy upbeat song that almost doesn't sound country to me; it doesn't have deep, powerful lyrics that make any impact - they're just light and fluffy, but it's a change from her power ballads. It almost has a rock sound to it. I really like this and it's stuck in my head and again, her voice really suits it well. I hope she releases an album soon and it's full of great songs like this.

Not everyone will like her but so what. The song is fun. The chorus is catchy. It's not the deepest song but it's not intended to be. Looking forward to how the rest of her album is. Maybe she really can be a country singer.

Jessica Simpson finally home,

Where some others haven't, I have appreciated Jessica's singing talent through her pop albums. However, admittedly whilst she definitely has good vocal ability she wasn't quite the pop vixen that her contemporaries were, like the Britneys and Christina's of the music industry.
With steel guitars and Jessica finally being able to sing with her twang, this has 'country' stamped all over. You might think that moving to country music would cause Jessica to become too distant from her pop persona and pop fans, but this song is actually a very good country song with crossover appeal. With it's fun, flirty and upbeat vibe its a perfect Summer song which seems to reflect Jessica's personality well. The lyrics are not at all deep and meaningful but I don't think that was the purpose of this particular single. Instead it serves as an intriging introduction to her upcoming album.

Don't Come On Over,

For Jessica Simpson, she has hit a very rough patch the past several years, not only from her heartbreaking divorce from Nick Lachey, but also musically too. After her last album, the dissapointing A Public Affair, which was really the pits, and her flub when Dolly Parton was inducted into the Kennedy Center Honors last year, she really needed to find a new way to capture her audience. Her latest single, Come On Over shows Jessica trying to go into the modern country sound that Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood have thrived in the past few years. Sadly, Jessica hasn't shown that promise in this single. I wasn't really impressed with her effort on the song. She really didn't show that is comeback worthy enough, to crossover into country, especially when so many people still can't get rid off her boots are made a walkin'. She really needs to try harder, if she wants to make it happen. For her sake, her upcoming album really needs to deliver.
