Excellent, top notch production, songs and singing!,

I've never been a huge fan of country music. But I remember the first time i heard "you're still the one" i went crazy. The song is completely moving. A couple weeks went by and i was flipping thru the T.V. and heard "That don't impress me much". I told my wife, hey now there are 2 different singers (country) that I like. When the video ended it said it was Shania Twain. I was absolutely floored. A couple weeks later I was listening to a pop station and heard "from this moment". I didn't know who did it, when I found out it was Shania I finally decided to go get the CD. This album is full of great rock, country and pop. Shania has a very tasteful voice and Mutt Lange is one over the top producer. If you like variety in your music you gotta pick this up. She pulls of a Bonnie Raitt style tune with "If you wanna touch her ask" and you can hear a Blondie influence on "When". She pulls out some great southern rock meets bryan adams on "Whatever you do! don't!". The vocal melodies on this album are the best i've heard in a long time. Shania can take a pop tune "From this moment" and pull off a Mariah with ease and quite a bit more style. If you buy one CD this year, make it this one! there isn't a bad song on this album.

Not very country, but good provocative pop,

I like country and I like the real country, Dolly, Loretta, Tammy, etc. But I like good adult contemporary music too. This is just to let you know where I'm coming from. Country purists won't care for this. But those who don't mind crossover which leans much more to a rather seductive pop sound than traditional country will go for it. For my money, "From This Moment On" is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. It has a delicacy, and yet a powerful emotional build-up. Then there's the upbeat "Man,I Feel Like a Woman!" Nothing subtle here! "You're Still The One" has the beat, the energy, but not the annoying loudness that a certain other pop/country singer overdoes. "That Don't Impress Me Much" is a bit more country than some of these that have received a lot of radio play. And "Rock This Country" speaks for itself. If you like Shania, you should really like this CD. If you don't, well, that's the way it goes.

Cheerful Pop Girl Power.,
By
This review is from: Come on Over (Audio CD)
This is both a good & different album than any other Country based music I've heard. Probably because it really isn't Country? After several listenings, I came to the conclusion that this was 70% Pop, 20% Country, & 10% Disco. I'll leave that debate to those more familiar with those genre's. This was a very lively, even optimistic group of songs. Shania's voice was better with the faster songs.
These are the ones I thought were done the best. "When," the only cynical tune on a cheerful album. It is a "yea right," tune that felt like it did not belong. Perhaps, thats why it stuck out? "From This Moment," certainly a smooth love ballad if there ever was one. Shania sang this from the heart, & it came through exquisitely. "Man I Feel Like A Woman," a feel good girl song with drums, electric guitar, & some mild fiddles. "Love Gets Me Everytime," more of a traditional love song with single girl meeting a guy & falling in love, with a fast tempo. "Come On Over," strong Accordion with one friend comforting another. "Your Still The One," probably her biggest hit? A smoothly done slow tempo tune about a couple who proved the naysayers wrong by staying together.

BEST ALBUM EVER MADE,

Who cares if it is country or pop. If you do not know by now that country music is changing, there is little hope for you. Here is why COO is the best album ever made. It has 16 great songs on it. Shania has released 10 of them to date. 8 of the 10 have been a top 5 or top 10 hit. The other 2 were in the top 20. COO is the only album in music history to record 8 top 10 singles from one album. Another 5 or 6 COO singles will be released in 2000. When they all become top 10 hits, no other artist will have a hope of catching Shania's record. After more than 2 years on the top of the charts, COO is still selling 70,000 units a week and is #3 on Billboard's Country Chart. What other solo artist of any genre can say that after 2 years - talk about staying power. At 14 million and counting (US sales only, never mind world wide sales), COO is alone in second place behind Alanis Morissette's (another Canadian) Jagged Little Pill at 16 million as the top selling album by a female artist. At Shania's selling pace, COO will surpass JLP in 2000. As for Shania's singing, you only have to listen to The Woman IN ME single or From This Moment ON to realize that Shania posseses a clear, powerful voice with considerable range. Her ballads are beautiful and the fast songs are fun to hear and sing along to. Tune into Shania's November 25th CBS TV Special to find out why she received the Country Music Association's highest honor- Entertainer Of The Year. Go and see her in one of her current sold out concerts(if you can get a ticket). She may be beautiful but she is one great charismatic, talented and very personable entertainer. She is the best.

WANG DANG SWEET POONTWAIN,

Man, not only is this woman HOT!, believe it or not her music is SMOKIN'! Listening to this CD kinda reminds me of listening to AC/DC's Highway TO Hell album. Both were produced by "Mutt" Lange, both have catchy riffs, both filled with vocal quips, both having a ton of energy, and both have irresistable songs. Bon Scott of AC/DC sang this album for the men 20 years on Highway and now Shania is upholding womanhood for the gals on this one. Filled with songs like Man! I Feel Like A Woman, If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!, Whatever You Do! Don't! and Honey I'm Home should bring out the woman in every woman, with too many exclamation points. But her songs are good, even for a man to hear, i'm proud of being a fan. This album is terrific from beginning to end, just like Highway To Hell is. She's just what country music need too, sounding like a breath of fresh air, she gives country music the firecracker up the arse it's been needing for a long time. And that does impress me much. Rock this country Shania!

Come on over, the songs are marvelous!,

The album responsible for shoving country into the mainstream with its irresistible hybrid sound that veered more towards rock is Shania Twain's Come On Over. If any album was cheated of the Grammy for Album of the Year, it was this one.Sixteen songs is a hefty load for this album. Trouble is, all the songs are either infectious rock-pop and ballads, I want to review them all, but will content myself with the highlight of highlights. Shania lets herself go with the rock-oriented opening track, celebrating the freedom to enjoy herself in "Man! I Feel Like A Woman." Note that she says, woman as opposed to lady, and the lines "I ain't gonna act politically correct" hints at the fun she wants. The pace picks up with "I'm Holdin' On To Love (To Save My Life)" made noticeable when Shania sings with only the fast-paced drums playing. "Love Gets Me Everytime" does have a trace of country with that fiddle and guitar and when she says "I gol' darn gone and done it." It's basically on a woman who was enjoying her single life until she discovered that romantic side of her. "Don't Be Stupid" is my favourite song here with that fiddle and that clapping drum that accompanies it after the chorus. She exhorts her loved one not to start suspecting her when she does the slightest thing. How bad is it? "You even get suspicious when I paint my nails/It's definitely distracting/The way you dramatize every little small detail." The ballad duet with Bryan White, "From This Moment On" is a song on love and fidelity that is appropriate for playing at a wedding. A song that could be a sequel to this is the other hit ballad, "You're Still The One". And speaking of ballads, I prefer "You've Got A Way" to the former. "When" is a reflective mid-paced song about wishful thinking laced with a touch of cynicism. So when will the protagonist stop living in a dream or make up? "When money grows on trees/People live in peace/Everyone agrees/When happiness is free/Love can guarantee/You'll come back to me--that's when" In other words, never. My second favourite song. The countrified Def Leppard tune that's "Honey I'm Home" portrays one stressed out working woman who's really had a bad day that rivals even PMS and feels much better once she comes home. If the backing male vocals going "Hey! Hey!" reminds one of Def Leppard, remember, that's Mutt Lange. "That Don't Impress Me Much" puts down people who have the looks but not the touch. Best disdainful line: "OK, so you're think you're Elvis or something. Whatever." And the rollicking "Rock This Country" could bring life to any dull party. The sobering "Black Eyes, Blue Tears" is about the need to get out of an abusive relationship and to "find your self-esteem and be free to forever dream." Key line: "I'd rather die standing than live on my knees begging please--no more." The mid-paced "I Won't Leave You Lonely" has a rhythm section recalling the Police's "Every Breath You Take." All the songs and backing vocals were done by Shania and husband the Mutt, who cut his teeth producing Def Leppard's Pyromania and Hysteria and Bryan Adams' Waking Up The Neighbours. The production's really smooth and palatable, all the songs could've been singles, so come on over and have a listen.

Great album by a great artist!,
This review is from: Come on Over (Audio CD)
Without doubt one of the greatest albums of all time. Shania takes Country Rock to the next level.
Country music, for the most part, has usually been dominated by males, but by being THE female artist in country with the 'balls' and originality to step up, set trends, break barriers and create country music the "un-Nahshville" way, Shania opened the doors for many new country artists today (especially females). ...did I say 'opened'? ...let me rephrase that, she blew the door off it's hinges! Shania is the biggest artist in country music PERIOD, she is even bigger and more globally renown worldwide then Garth Brooks. This is the biggest selling album Ever by a female artist, and it doesn't surprise me with tracks like; Man! I Feel Like a Woman!, I'm Holdin' On To Love, Love Gets Me Every Time, Don't Be Stupid, From This Moment On, Come on Over, When, Whatever You Do! Don't!, If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!, You're Still the One, Honey, I'm Home, That Don't Impress Me Much, Black Eyes, Blue Tears, I Won't Leave You Lonely, Rock This Country! and You've Got a Way. As you may have noticed, I just listed all 16 tracks because this album is simply flawless from start to finish.

Shania Twain Rocks with "Come on Over",
By
This review is from: Come on Over (Audio CD)
If you are a country music fan and love Shania Twain's pure country side, then this album is probably not for you. But, if you love pop music, and is a fan of Shania, then give this album a listen. Crossing over to the "pop" genre of music, Shania's third album rocks. This album has a mixture of rock music like the opening song "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" and "That's Don't Impress Me Much," and smooth but powerful ballads like "From this Moment On" and "Still the One." This album will have you dancing on your feet and singing to the lyrics. The booklet in the CD case contains lyrics to all the songs. Her songs have influences on realism instead of materialism, true love, power of women, survival, and a day in the life-all great songs that deliver meaning and inspiration. Probably the two most country-sounding songs are "Love Gets Me Everytime," and "Honey, I'm Home." Other that those two, all the songs are pop-sounding, with a dash of country sounds here and there. The second to last song on this album "Rock this Country!" saids it all: Shania is using her "pop" side to rock the country (music). Overall, a great album. It is a winner, and gives Shania's very best. She is a great artist! I really enjoy listening to it and I hope you will too.

Ballads That Your Kids Will Also Love!,
By MartyHansen (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Come on Over (Audio CD)
My wife originally bought this CD for herself. We ended up listening to it on family driving vacations. My kids love it too!Neither my wife nor I are big country music fans. (Our last country music album before this was the soundtrack from Urban Cowboy, a movie we saw while dating.) But we both enjoy Shania Twain's "Come On Over." My wife's favorite songs are "Man, I Feel Like A Woman," and "That Don't Impress Me Much." My favorites are "Rock This Country" (which is a great driving song), and "From This Moment On" (in which I imagine Shania, who is absolutely gorgeous, crooning to me in some honky-tonk bar). My kids love "You're Still The One," which I've convinced them is "mommy and daddy's song" (because it captures, for my wife and I, the challenges we faced early in our marriage). Whenever this song comes on, my daughter always yells at my wife and I, "Kiss! Kiss!" (which we do just for her). If you're looking for a CD the whole family will enjoy, Shania's "Come On Over" should be at the top of your list. |
