3.0 out of 5 stars NOT his worst
Anyone who listens to this album can hear for themselves that this is not his worst. I have been listening to his music from the beginning, and believe me he's had a handful of disappointing albums. This is not one of them. It is one of his funkiest/sexiest albums ever. I do not care very much for the personal lives or problems of an artist. The song is what you care...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mini Masterpiece, July 10, 2000
This review is from: Come (Audio CD)
In many ways one of his most brilliant quirky albums. "Come" is an exciting concept album that flows from everything to sex to abuse to racism to even more sex. The songs not only work great as written poetry but as great R&B music. The album starts out with the sex fest that is "Come" that is extremely long at over 10 minutes but is beat for beat hot rhythms. Followed is the even hotter "Pheromone". Great social commentary's come in the form of the story song "Papa" ("don't abuse your kids, or they'll end up like me.") and the awesome funk rap of "Race" ("I bleed, you bleed. Both the bold is red. Get it"). "Letitgo" is one of those great R&B gems that just doesn't get the radio play it deserves. It's a great funky number and is extremely heartfelt at the same time. "Orgasm" speaks for itself and is just a sex scene with some Prince music in the background. Talk about the conclusion. Maybe the best song on the set is a small gem that just hides within the middle. It's an electronic song called "Loose!" which pulsates with hot dance grooves and tons of funk. The CD is almost worth it just for that track. The album is full of not only great feeling and hot R&B sounds but has light faire like the mellow "Solo" and R&B ballad "Space". It's also Prince's last record and a great ending to an awesome career. The Artist has made some great stuff, but I think this Prince record is nearly untouchable. Eccentric music and creative stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex Emotional Tapestry, May 26, 2001
This review is from: Come (Audio CD)
Come is one of Prince's most underrated albums. I believe it was an album he was obligated to make, to meet his contract with Warner Bros. The album is a very dark, depressing and morbid in a sense. The Prince on the cover is very creepy and disturbing. The music is some of his most compelling work in a long while. The album tackles various issues. Papa is a song about all those father's that abuse their children, Race is about racism, and there's much more. The album is quite explicit. This is not an album you would put on at a party, or even play really loud. Its just a complex album of songs that require the listener to sit with the songs and take them in. Highlights include the funky Loose!, Letitgo, Solo and Pheromone. This album is not for everyone, if you are a casual listener of Prince you may want to borrow this one before you buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of tha Best, March 14, 2000

Maybe if u stop comparing Prince albums to other Prince albumsu might find some redemption in his most recent work.

Come hassome fantastic material on it. I actually consider this one of my favourite Prince albums. Just like the song "dark", it is prolific in it's description of this album. It is indeed "dark". The haunting tune "solo" is a great acapella that transcends u into a dreary isolated world, rain included. It has some poetic lines that chill your soul. "My name is no one?" Can u beat that? "Loose" is Prince's stab at the dance techno genre, and it absolutely rockz. "Pheremone" is arguably the best song Prince has ever recorded, "Papa" is a ode to the fathers of the world who like to beat their children. This song villafies them, with biting avengence. Do I need to go on about the rest of the trax? Yes eye do! "dark" has a mesmorizing keyboard hook that makes u swoon with delight, "Race", (the jughead of this album) combines a message with a beat! "Orgasm", well. do i need to go there? And "come" a prince anthem, an epic of a song that kicks off this 3 ring circus, a 10 minute jam, a 10 dollar groove. "Space" ...a melody that melts u with every listen, again it sends a shock and a chill as it fills the space of your brain.

If u are unfunky, don't bother comin' to tha Come Experience. If u dig a mix of jammin Prince toonz, stay awhile. Listen to tha lyrics, jam to tha original beats of "Prince's" last album.

And check out the killa killa jacket design. Gothic Prince? U gotta love that. The pix in the liner notes are fantastic! Spooky Prince, rest in peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best Prince album, December 29, 2005

Heres my story, i was sitting around one night with my good friend rob and he had just bought the Prince 'Come' album. Now I had never heard a song off it, all I knew is it was the album he made with the deliberate intention of pissing off his record company, and in turn what proceeded to come from the speakers was the most original and diverse sounding album i had ever heard. To say that these songs are unmemorable is baffling, this album jumps from industrial techno 'Loose' to 'Papa' with the deep bass keeping the tempo Prince proceedes to scream "SMACK SMACK! ew papa papa" making it the darkest Prince song ive heard with the exception of the secret track on New Power Soul, and then into 'Solo' which is just him singing while slowly strumming a harp. And why not end an album with 'Orgasm' which is pretty much exactly what the song is, a female orgasming for around a minute. I remember hearing this album and hearing something i had never expected to hear in music in general, let alone a Prince album. Hearing this album made me wish he would get angry with record companies more, it forced him to step outside the normal Prince. Buy this album, it is like no other Prince album you have in your collection and its one of the bests.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Prince album of all-time, September 23, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Come (Audio CD)
For those 'fans' out there (yeah you, 'Dr. Mo') need to shut their mouths about Prince releasing 'Contractual obligations'. Pretty much the only album that Prince released to fulfill a contract would be 'Chaos And Disorder'. Do people just not think that Prince doesn't want to release music? He is a musician after all. This album is great, and if you don't like, you probably are a fan of Purple Rain, and not Prince.

Prince goes all out in experimentation, lyrically, musically, and visually (visually as in the image of Prince standing before a cemetery, a very powerful idea). The lyrics and theme are very explicit, yes, but Prince pulls it off in such unique artistic quality that I doubt any other musician can do. Behind every track is an underlining emotion of what Prince has always been about.

Tracks like 'Papa', 'Loose!', and the A Capella-like 'Solo' are all unique pieces to Prince's usually music, but don't stray too far from what you hear on, say, the New Power Generation album.

Now, if Prince had to release some music for an album, do you think he would really care about trying so hard to create such a strong atmosphere and style? Each track is a masterpiece that I can listen to over and over. Often I enjoy repeating the entire album right through, because I can't get enough. I would even go so far as to consider almost all of these tracks as my favorite Prince songs, especially 'Papa', 'Letitgo', 'Loose!', 'Pheromone'... well, I'm not going to list all of them.

This is not one of them. It is one of his funkiest/sexiest albums ever. I do not care very much for the personal lives or problems of an artist. The song is what you care about. This album contains several songs that will have you grooving to the beat. Songs like Space, Come, and Letitgo contain some of the craziest grooves he has ever concocted. You would have to be a biased, brain-dead "fan" in order not to feel the funk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than You Remember..!, May 26, 2001
This review is from: Come (Audio CD)
I rate this Prince release 5 stars for the sprawling, epic almost 12 minute title cut alone, but the rest of the album ain't too shabby either! "Space", with it's insistent, catchy bassline, "Papa"(the coolest argument against child-abuse ever recorded!) is Prince at his most inspired, and the dark, haunting "Solo" is one of his finest vocal performances ever. Ignore the conventional attitude that this is merely 'filler' or Prince 'lite', and see the LP for what it is, Prince, exorcising demons, and literally burying his former self. Just sit back, relax, and let the hypnotic bassline of "Come" carry you away.....everything else will be easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars one of the creepiest albums I've heard in awhile, May 19, 2001
By
This review is from: Come (Audio CD)
From what I understand, this album was more of a contractural obligation for warner, and was released after he changed his name to the symbol (it states on the album cover, "Prince 1958-1993" to signify this). Even though the purple one may not have thought this album as worthy of release, it's still worth a listen, such is the depth of his talent. This album greatly reminds me of madonna's 1992 album, "erotica". It represents the same dark, aggressive sexual tone that was on "erotica". There is also other issues here besides sex, such as the child abuse and suicide displayed on "Papa". The title track is an excellent, 11-minute x-rated jam which never becomes dull. Beware though, This disc is not for everyone, and it's not a disc that's meant to be played out loud. You have to really listen to what he's saying in order to get the most out of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rehabilitation of reputation is in order..., September 26, 2004
This review is from: Come (Audio CD)
Come sold poorly when it was released - in fact, it was probably his worst-selling album since his pre-superstardom days. I think only one single charted (Letitgo), and, if memory serves, it barely scraped the bottom of the top forty. Critics generally didn't think highly of it either. Prince had announced his retirement/name change prior to its release, so the assumption seemed to be that this was a throwaway, a contractual-obligation and no more. It may well have been given to Warners for that purpose, but to my ears Come is to date the most enjoyable record Prince has released since Sign O' The Times.

The strongest asset Come has is that it is relatively brief - the previous three Prince releases (Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls and Symbol) were all very lengthy and bloated. The decent material on those records got lost in a sea of mediocrity. (To be fair, Prince was not unique in this regard - at the dawning of the CD era, most artists seemed to feel it was necessary to fill almost every minute available on a CD, and the end result was a lot of overly long, dreary records.) Come has ten songs and can be easily digested in one listening session.

Best of all, the core of the album is made up of concise, well-written songs - I think Space, Pheromone, Loose, Race, Dark and Letitgo are as worthy as anything Prince had committed to record since 1987. The Symbol album had as much quality material (if not more), but it got lost in the frustration of slogging through all the segues and duff tracks . Here, the strong material is not diluted.

Of the remaining tracks, Come is an overly long sex anthem (worth a listen if you need a laugh), Papa is perhaps the strangest and most disturbing Prince lyric yet, and Solo and Orgasm are dreadful. If you've passed by this release because you thought it was a bottom-tier Prince album, I'd strongly suggest giving it a try. I'll bet you'll be pleasantly surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing album..., February 27, 2004
This review is from: Come (Audio CD)
I was never a Prince fan growing up. My mother used to blast The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, Diamonds and Pearl,1999, you know, his radio tracks while driving me to school and I would just hate it...years went by... then one day while shopping for used CD's the title grabbed me (especially being a 16 year old kid with one thing on his mind). COME--- I thought, interesting, I had never heard of this album, why not check it out! I became even more interested while standing in line reading the track titles... COME, SPACE, LETITGO, DARK, ORGASM...I really wanted to know what this record was all about. Believe me when I say the first track is amazing! I had it on full blast and repeat all night. I took it to school (years ago) and let my girls listen to it...they were blushing... the lyrics are filled with descriptions of sex in no way I had ever heard, so provocative and sexy, yet never got filthy, then, with Prince's unique musical mastermind he managed to mix it with jazzy pop and R&B hooks that keep your head bobbin' right up into a climax that upon first hearing it will leave you with chills. Listen to it loud! The tracks to follow are quite good. Space, a sexy cosmic dance track; Pheromone- a dark, graphic voyeouristic fantasy tune, Loose- a hard, techo-like track that you can just imagine Carmen Electra moving to, Papa- a slow starting tale of child abuse and suicide that evolves into an awesome rock bit, Race- not bad, good message; Dark- a love/hate filled ballad with great horn pieces; Solo- another dark(by the way, alot of these songs are a bit gloomy for Prince) harp and vocal track that leaves you feeling a bit down; followed by Letitgo- which picks you up and gets the body moving right into Orgasm- a track that is funny, sexy and influential- especially for a high school kid. I have aged a bit since that first night of discovering his Purple Majesty, but to this day I own 99% of everything he has recorded and COME still rates in my top 3 for Prince material...there really is nothing like COME. enjoy it.
