Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Apollo s Fire conjures early 19th-century rural Americana with an evocative journey through traditional
folk songs, fiddle tunes, barn dances, and the indispensable Old Time revivalist meetings. This is
music as old as the hills themselves, a melting pot of Irish, English, and Scottish tunes that permeated
Appalachian culture and rural America, based on field recordings of old-time and Appalachian singers.

Dazzling fiddle playing and delicious swing ... all done with great spirit and brio. --Fanfare

5.0 out of 5 stars Come to The River Now November 7, 2011
By Timbo

This is a great collection of choral arrangements of American song--it will put one in a great mood any morning when there's time for a second cup of coffee. The voices are truly angelic and you may find yourself singing along without meaning to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific recording December 31, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is the best recording I've heard of early American folksongs and religious music (gospel songs and shape-note hymns). It also includes some instrumental dance tunes and a few well-known British folksongs of several centuries ago. Apollo's Fire is a classically-trained group, so each piece is beautifully performed with wonderful, sweet harmonies and excellent instrumentals. I often put this CD on as background music but then find that I stop whatever I'm doing to listen to it. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is enjoys traditional music.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointing September 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I ordered this CD after the NY Times gave it a very positive review, and I was disappointed. It starts off with a rousing Appalachian Barn Dance and Nobody but the Baby, but as it moves on, the songs seem to grow more and more plaintive. The quality of the recording also seemed a bit off, making the music sometimes feel distant. I'm eager to support up and coming groups, but maybe ordering various songs from electronically makes more sense.
