5.0 out of 5 stars The last track is superb., September 19, 1999

This review is from: Come Come Ye Saints (Audio CD)
The strength of this CD is the last track, an unusual arrangement of "Come, Come, Ye Saints." Most of the hymn's appeal has always been its historical context; I've often found it rather plain. This arrangement, though, turns it into a true work of art. It undertakes to replicate the pioneer odyssey, with all its griefs and triumphs, through a subtle alternation within verses of minor and major keys. My one criticism might be that the minor-key "And should we die" passage is a little strong, with the male voices drowning everything else out.

There are some other solid performances on this album. The Mack Wilberg arrangements are especially well-developed, although I actually prefer the versions performed by the composer's own BYU Concert Choir and Men's Chorus.

This is an inspiring recording that consists of eleven varied and large-scale arrangements of classic Latter-day Saint hymns for the full Mormon Tabernacle Choir plus organ and orchestra, all recorded in audiophile-grade sound in the Mormon Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Those familiar with Mormon music will recognize a new hymn in this collection, "Faith in Every Footstep," which was commissioned in 1997 as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the pioneer exodus across the plains in 1847. The recording ends with the title track, which is probably the most-recognized Latter-day Saint hymn.

The arrangements elevate these hymns to great musical heights, but without ever leaving behind the steadfast and straightforward faith expressed in the lyrics. You don't have to be Mormon--or even religious¬--to appreciate this beautiful and inspiring recording, which is for my money the best that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has ever released in its long history.
