Editorial Reviews

Review

Come Sign Witb Us offers a clean, direct approach to sign language instruction for non-deaf students. The language described in this presentation is Pidgin Sign English (PSE); this particular version of sign language is quite appropriate as an introductory language for basic communication. The illustrations of the signs are large, providing for easy replication of the sign by the reader. In addition, thesigns are translated into both English and Spanish. Lessons are organized around readers' acquisition of words associated with various everyday topics. The goals of each lesson are clearly presented, and each lesson comes equipped with a variety of appropriate activities. Approximately ten target words are included in each of the books 20 lessons. One of the most interesting and beneficial aspects of this book are the "Facts about deafness" vignettes, which appear in each of the lessons. .Valuable information is imparted regarding deafness and hearing loss; such information is common knowledge in the deaf community, but such information will provide valuable insight for the (presumably non-deaf) readers into some of the physiological and cultural issues which confront the deaf.Come Sign Witb Us should prove to be a valuable tool both for use in classroom (to introduce "hearing" youngsters to sign language), as well as for parents who are interested in exposing their hearing children to the language and culture of the deaf. -- From Independent Publisher

5.0 out of 5 stars Come Sign with Us: Sign Language Activities for Children, August 5, 2000

As a new teacher I find this book to a wonderful inspiartion to teach out of the box. I want to teach Spanish and A.S.L. but wasn't sure how. When I saw this book, it got me even more excited about teaching than I already was. I immediately came up with ideas to intergrate Spanish, A.S.L., and everyday speaking. It may seem silly to some because it was so simple, but the idea to tech them together had not come to me in such a complete form until I saw this book. these are ideas that can be adapted to any topic and cirriculum. Great for new teacher and the veteran trying somthing new or expanded.
