Book Description

November 27, 2007
Reluctant hero, Honore Greenwood, has a knack for embroiling himself in the most violent conflicts of the Southern Plains. Known as Plenty Man to the Comanches, Honore serves as ransom negotiator for captives among the Indians. As if his life wasn't in danger enough, Honore has offered his services to the New Mexico Volunteers in the Civil War. But as Honore's luck would have it, he's in the same unit as Luther Sheffield, a man whose grudge against Greenwood knows no boundaries, even though they are fighting on the same side.

Leaving behind his beautiful Arapaho bride, Honore rides out, joining his legendary friend, Kit Carson, as a scout. But he is swept into more action than he bargained for--heavy combat in the battles of Val Verde Ford and Glorieta Pass plus Indian attacks--all the while watching over his shoulder for the ruthless Luther Sheffield. Worried that he may soon be ordered to take up arms against his own adoptive tribe, the Comanches, Honore resigns as Kit's scout to return to his tribe.

But Honore's halcyon days among the Indians cannot last forever, and he knows that eventually his old cavalry unit will come to attack his village. Torn between a nation on the rise and his own adoptive culture, Plenty Man is forced to lead the fight for Comanche freedom against his old friend, the great Kit Carson, in a battle at a remote place in the Texas Panhandle called Adobe Walls. But in the end, it becomes difficult to tell enemy from ally, and Plenty Man knows his loyalty to the Indians may cost him everything - his beautiful wife, his freedom to return to white civilization, his friendship with Kit, and even his very life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this sequel to Moon Medicine, Blakely continues the frontier adventures of Honore Greenwood, a French émigré renamed Plenty Man by his adopted Comanche tribe. From 1853 to 1868, he goes from Comanche warrior to New Mexico Civil War volunteer, scouting for his beloved friend Kit Carson, and then back to the Comanche. When he isn't tricking other gamblers or tribesmen, Plenty Man, who narrates, is in the company of famous frontier figures like Carson and Chief Quanah Parker and at important battles like Valverde, in New Mexico, and Adobe Walls, in Texas, giving him a wide angle on the roots and repercussions of the Indian wars. He is fiercely loyal to Kit and to his Comanche family both—a tragedy in the making as, inevitably, Kit and Comanche line up on opposite sides of the battlefield. Though Blakely's two Plenty Man novels follow closely the footsteps of Thomas Berger's 1964 novel Little Big Man, a story this funny, suspenseful and affecting can do without an original premise. From Booklist

Following his adventures in Moon Medicine (2001), Honore Greenwood, aka Plenty Man (plenty of man despite his small stature), is swept up in the southwestern Indian Wars from 1853 through 1868. Like Little Big Man, Plenty Man manages to attend every major event and to brush with its most famous men: Quanah Parker, Kit Carson, and Lucien Maxwell. He grieves over Carson's fate as the celebrated hunter, friend to the southwestern tribes, is forced to take sides and join in the final push to move the Comanche to reservations. The plot is sprawling but holds together because of another feature of Little Big Man: humor. In one scene, Plenty Man's beautiful but fickle Comanche wife runs away with a man from another tribe. Plenty Man doesn't want her back, but his position demands he kick up some sort of fuss, so he declares to his rival that he wants to give him horses for taking the woman off his hands. Great summer reading. John Mort

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Literature, February 9, 2007
This review is from: Come Sundown (Hardcover)
Blakely is more than an author. I couldn't put this book down. It has history that should be required reading for every high school student to learn about the western plains tribes and the Europeans moving in. Blakely weaves classical music through battles, philosophy from both the European and Indian cultures, descriptions of horses used for buffalo hunting and battle, warfare from the Comanche and white perspective with conversations from the leaders of both sides, nature studies in plants and geography. Where else would you find a protagonist that is ugly, short and plays a Stradivarius violin for pleasure. He speaks several languages and teaches his Cheyenne wife to read and write.

This is the second book in his trilogy and I can't wait for the third one. No other author can put so much literature in a book that is called a Western. This should rank with Mark Twain and other classic writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Western Novel of a Lifetime, June 25, 2006
This review is from: Come Sundown (Hardcover)
COME SUNDOWN by Mike Blakely is truly the finest novel of the old west in print today. This story combines real-life characters such as William Bent and Kit Carson with the fictional character "Plenty Man" in a way that is not just believable, but in fact is remarkable. Plenty Man is living the life of a trader to the Plains Indians, sharing the joys and sorrows of the Comanches who claim him as a brother. At the same time, Plenty Man continues his life long friendships with frontiersmen such as William Bent, Kit Carson, Lucien Maxwell, and John Prowers. Those who would become enemies of the Bent community thus become the enemy of Plenty Man. And those who are the enemy of the Comanche become the enemy of Plenty Man. These relationships will remind the reader of other great western partners like Gus and Call of Lonesome Dove. And the wilderness adventures of Come Sundown will remind the reader of the great Sackett novels. But the ability of Mike Blakely to weave buffalo hunts and prairie battles with the efforts of men trying to do "what is right" rises above all other old west fiction. Author Blakely is truly "Plenty Storyteller."

5.0 out of 5 stars Come Sundown, January 26, 2007
This review is from: Come Sundown (Hardcover)
Very good read. Extremely well written in the way the author has tied history into his story line. Great use of the English language in his descriptions of events, thoughts and emotions. Not the run of the mill ole western.
