Playing Time - 72:16 -- Twenty-two tracks of contemporary old-time music for the new generation sample a large variety of primarily Rounder Records artists from Putnam String County Band to Corey Harris, Mac Benford & the Woodshed All-Stars to Alison Krauss, Dirk Powell to Norman Blake, and many others. Cuts vary from the raw simplicity of a singer and banjo (Dirk Powell's "Hop High My Lulu Gal") to more intricate arrangements of full ensembles (Dry Branch Fire Squad's "Walking Back to Richmond"). Scott Alarik provides 4 pages of liner notes about old-time music, and he closes with a quote from Dirk Powell, "I think of traditional music as a bottomless well; the more you take from it, the more you give to it. It's a sustainable resource; that what's so powerful about it, and why more people are listening to it and playing it today...." Three additional pages provide paragraph descriptions about each of the featured artists who works range from recordings released between 1973-2004.

A sampler such as this is a great way to keep the music moving from generation to generation. The ongoing resurgence in old-time music continues strong and vibrant with releases like this one. Some standout tracks include Corey Harris's "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground," Alison Krauss and Union Station's "There is a Reason," Jones and Leva's "A Sweet Goodbye," and Dirk Powell and Riley Baugus' "When Sorrows Encompass Me Round." Corey Harris' "Station Blues" incorporates guitar, vocals, fife and drum. "Amazing Grace" is executed as an interesting harmonica duet by John Sebastian and Paul Butterfield.

This album is simply awesome. If you are looking for a sophisticatedly simple bluegrass and folk album, this is it. This features some of the most beautiful fiddle and guitar work. If you love country, bluegrass, folk, or are simply looking to expand your musical horizons, this one is for you. From almost silly ditties like Black Jack Davey and Hop High, to the sad and contemplative Perilous Journey, the bluesy Station Blues and Midnight on the Water, and the more modern hymn-likecuts from Allison Krause and Union Station, this covers the scope of Southern music. Also a good album for exposing to people who normally dislike country because all they have heard is on the radio. This is what it was meant to be.

I found this disc disappointingly uneven. While there are some excellent performances of old-time music by Dirk Powell including a haunting version that he does with Riley Baugus of "When Sorrows Encompass Me Round," these are available on other CD's, as is most of the music on this anthology. The tracks by the Putnam String County Band (sic) featuring Jay Ungar and John Cohen, later of the New Lost City Ramblers, are no longer available anywhere else. I found them interesting, partly because I like these two performers, but their work here is not compelling. Most of the other music on this disc is more "modern" - leaning toward current pop music - than old-time. If you like the pop-style work of people like Alison Kraus, you'll like this disc, but if you're looking for more traditional sounds, you probably won't.

Born and bred in the big city, I moved to wide open spaces several years ago. I began exploring different genres of music. This roots muscic from the Appalachian region of the country fascinated me. The CD is amazing in its breadth. These are not typical modern "country" songs. There are a few familiar tunes.....Jay Unger's Midnight on the Water is marvelous. Corey Harris plays a haunting rendidition of Dark was the Night & Cold was the Ground. This CD contains a wide variety of music from toe tapping fiddle tunes to to mournful laments and should be in the collection of everyone interested in American roots/Apppalachian music. A must have!

This music is brilliant if you like blue grass. Sometimes there is nothing better than listening to a compilation of different artists playing the same genre of music but experience such a wide variety of rhythm and sounds. What I mean is every track is very different from the next and I dont think there is any one that stands out above the rest, they are all great!

Most of these songs are new to my ears, and I love that! More of the older music should be there to listen to at any time. The enjoyment of talented musicians should not be limited to a list of top-40 for the benefit of someones pocket. Free music from the slavery of corporate greed, let all music be equal, everywhere.
