3.0 out of 5 stars Eye candy book
I read this book while traveling through the British Isles. It's most definitely a chick book. It uncovers the details of a relationship that I would guess women would enjoy more than men. The prose is written in a very effortless style and the humor in the book often feels forced or contrived, especially the Amy chapters (eg. refer to her segment on working out)...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Keeper!, January 24, 2006
This review is from: Come Together (Paperback)
I recently came across this while cleaning out some old books, read a few pages, and decided to put it back on the shelf for a re-read soon.

Come Together is chick lit of the British variety, and an excellent example of the genre. The twist in this one is that the co-authors, male and female, write the chapters alternating between the male and female characters' first-person voices, giving a multi-dimensional view of the relationship and the events. Like Bridget Jones, there is lots of insecurity and amusing goof-ups before the relationship can really happen, but this time it's not just the female being spazzy.

And it's often laugh-out-loud funny. What made me decide to re-read it was finding this passage again( this is Amy, the female protagonist, calling her best friend Helen the morning after meeting Jack, the soon-to-be boyfriend):

H: (sleepily) Hmmm?

Me: (a pause, just so she'll know it's me) Blachhhhhhhhh! (I inject this greeting with as much postpuking throaty misery as I can muster)

H: Blachh-blachh-blachh? Or just blachh?

Me: Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaachh!

H: I'll be right over.

I love H. She understands me.

What's not to love? If you are a fan of Brit chick lit and are looking for a fun read, check this one out. It's a few years old, but well worth looking for.

This review is from: Come Together: A Novel (Hardcover)
If you loved Bridget Jones, you will love this book. Amy is Bridget with attitude! I got this book and fell in love with this couple! You will love seeing both sides of a relationship. Then I found out that the Authors are now married! Also, there is a sequel out in the UK called Come Again!

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!!, May 28, 2006

First, I must thank the people who listed this book on their favorite 'chick lit' lists posted on this site. I am new to the genre and was looking around for something a little different and hadn't heard of this one before. It is witty, sexy, British, honest and is extremely well written. I agree with some other reviewers that the last couple pages are kind of rushed and awkward, but I can't complain when on every other page I was enjoying myself so much. I am a Nick Hornby and Helen Fielding fan and the authors of this book have a similar funny/poignant-without-feeling-sappy way of detailing the ups and downs of dating life. I will read the sequel and seek out other titles by these authors as individuals as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stupid ending spoils this otherwise great book, June 2, 2004
This review is from: Come Together (Paperback)
It's one of those books that you can't put down until you reached the very last page.

But there's one problem -and it's on that last page. Ending spoils this very enjoyable book. It's predictable, cliche, rushed. The whole argument between Jack and Amy is stupid coz it's cleraly not his fault and yet everybody is blaming him and thinking breakup is a must.

So, first 250 pages - page turner, gret fun.
Last 30 pages - romance novel disaster.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first of many..., June 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Come Together (Paperback)
I picked this book up a few years ago, based only on the information given on the back cover. Definately one of the best purchases I have ever made. This book was my introduction to the "chicklet" genre and I have never looked back. I laughed out loud at the dialouge between the two main characters...so typical, but so REAL. It is written by one male author and one female author...he writing the main male character chapters and she picking up where he left off, from the female point of view.(The authors got married after writing this book) It's true to life dialouge goes in to the thoughts and lives of both characters on their journey into courtship. Hilarious at times, and maddening at others, this book is a true find. Perfect read for females that have "had it" with men, and equally as perfect for them. (We make them crazy, too!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully funny and entertaining, December 5, 2000
By
This review is from: Come Together (Paperback)
This book proved another delightful surprise, witty, engaging and even honest. It felt quite original, despite another exploration of the singles scene in London, given its dual narrators, both of whom are very likable characters. And you really get inside both their heads, seeing things from both perspectives and getting to really know - not to mention like - both of them.

Amy and Jack are two single people living in London, working to get their various careers on track and trying to figure, well, life out, I guess. When they meet, Amy's sick of being lonely and Jack's in the midst of a bout of one-night-stands, so they're not exactly on the same wave length. But the book details how they get there, with obstacles along the way. And even though it's pretty clear how things will end up, the trip is still very nice.

All of the characters are richly drawn, with a few minor exceptions, which helps keep the book interesting. More than anything, however, it's lighthearted fun, a sure cure for the blues - I'm very glad I picked up this book when a little cranky, as I read it all in one sitting and emerged slightly more cheery. I definitely think this is an enjoyable, worthwhile read that's different from a lot of others and is certainly time - and money - well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Your Time, November 14, 2000
By
This review is from: Come Together (Paperback)
This book was a very fun and flirty story told in an interesting way. The authors used a "he said-she said" style to narrate, alternating each chapter. It was this twist that helped me through the book at a couple of thinner points in the tale. While I didn't really laugh out loud, the book is still humorous and entertaining and I recommend it for nice light reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sequel is good too!, October 9, 2000
This review is from: Come Together: A Novel (Hardcover)
Me again! I just finished Come Again, which is the sequel to Come Together. It was hee-lah-ree-us! Especially Part 2! There IS a continuation for Matt and H and wedding bells for Jack and Amy. There's also the introduction of two other of Jack and Amy's mates, namely Suzie and Stringer. Throw in some romance, attraction, lots of booze, a stag night and a hen party and what you get is utter chaos, not to mention a bladder bursting laugh! Especially Part 2! So how come Amazon U.S doesn't carry the second book? ...Hallelujah, I found it at Borders down town. Them English pounds exchange rate would wipe me out if I had to order from Amazon U.K!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect quick read, August 10, 2000
This review is from: Come Together: A Novel (Hardcover)
I bought this book at the grocery store on my way to the swimming pool and it wasn't put down until I finished it! The Jack portions were hilarious! His thought process was so typically male that I found myself reading aloud sections to my husband. And Amy was dead on for the typical female...from her relationship with her mom to her job to her pamper me shopping sprees. Highly suggested!
