Everyone has problems in life, everyone has setbacks - it is how we deal with those problems and setbacks that change us and make us into a better person. In Rick McDaniel's book Comeback, he reiterates that one must deal with the past to get to the future successfully.

This one hundred and seven page book is a very fast read and can be read quickly under two hours. It is written in easy-to-read block format with bold headings and quick one-to-three liners for verification.

It is easy for the reader to decipher that Rick McDaniel is a Christian pastor who has a passion and love for people, especially those who are hurt, lonely or dealing with a setback of life.

The book discusses why we all have setbacks, what we can learn from them and how to get ready for a comeback. It promotes change, which none of us ever want to do. It explains not only the components of a comeback but the steps to achieve goals to move on with life after having a setback. The goal is to have a strong, satisfying and successful comeback.

Rick explains the core reason we have a setback in life is that we need to rely and trust in God. There are reasons and purposes for setbacks and we need to come to Him for motivation, change and confidence in making a comeback. It is a hard thing to do but we must learn from the setback, change what we were doing to cause the setback and then look forward to a comeback.

The final two chapters of the book concentrate on comebacks of famous people including an interesting conversation with Frank Reich, a former NFL football player along with a list of Rick's top ten greatest comebacks. Listed are mostly sport-related. However, Rick purposely has the most important comeback being the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who forgives us of our sins and helps us ultimately deal with our own setbacks so that we can attain comebacks too.

This book is a refreshing look at how to overcome the depression and mire one easily falls into when there is a setback. Humans so easily get caught up in their own circumstances, especially if they produce negative results. This book aids in helping one move on in life by not only accepting the setback but by learning from it, changing our behavior and moving forward to an exciting, purposeful comeback.

Everyone faces adversity in their lives at some point. Most people learn to take adversity for what it is - a temporary setback. Others allow the temporary setback to become a permanent fixture in their lives that hobbles them and keep them from ever reaching their potential. Pastor Rick McDaniel of Richmond Community Church in Virginia has written this book; COMEBACK: Overcoming the Setbacks in Your Life, to remind us that, with God's help and our perseverance, all things are possible.

This quick, easy read explores the reasons why setbacks occur and what we should learn from them when they do occur. Once the setback is defined and spiritual guidance is laid out for overcoming the setback, McDaniel then provides preparation for making the absolute commitment to make a comeback. I stress the word "commitment" here. As the author points out, without commitment, there will be no comeback. The Pastor states, "You change your mind through knowledge, you change your heart through attitude and you change your future through commitment."

Next we look at the components for making a successful comeback from any adversity. Then Pastor McDaniel includes an interview he conducted with former NFL quarterback, Frank Reich. Reich is known for two very well known football comebacks; once in college while at the University of Maryland and again as the backup quarterback that led the Buffalo Bills to victory over the Houston Oilers in NFC playoffs overcoming a 32-point deficit.

The book concludes with a collection of the author's choice of the ten greatest comebacks in history. Of course this chapter will stir debate as most any top ten list would, but I have to admit there are certainly some great comebacks chronicled here.

Whenever adversity rears its ugly head, I try to recall the proverb many people mistakenly quote as an actual Bible verse. It is not from Bible, but is sound wisdom; this too shall pass. This is sound wisdom to live by when facing adversity as nothing will last forever. By making the right commitment and being diligent, we can make a comeback. This little book will point you in the right direction and help you along the way.

I wanted to review this book because I thought that some of the concepts behind it could be applied to my life. While this is a spiritual/religious book, it covers a wide range of problems and gives you techniques to use to overcome those issues. I liked the easy reading format of the book, and with the short length, was able to read it in one sitting. This isn't one of those really in depth Theology books, so it can inspire a wide range of readers :)

Rick McDaniel is a compassionate, iconic, revered, and respected senior pastor of the Richmond Community Church in Richmond, VA: he tours the country with inspirational messages to his followers that aid them in changing their lives. In this book COMEBACK: OVERCOMING THE SETBACKS IN YOUR LIFE he delivers what feel like lessons from the pulpit. Not that he does not write well, it is just that this book comes form and is directed toward the fundamentalist Christian Right. That is not a bad aspect that deserves criticism. It simply is an observation after reading the book carefully that McDaniel sees all things as being attributable to God.

For example, he offers some insight on restoring confidence after a setback: 'Will you do your part? Will you do what you can do? If so, the first thing you can do is to restore your confidence. You can choose to be confident. Your confidence always takes a big hit when you have a setback. When you lose your job, it shakes you. When your spouse walks out the doors, it rocks you. Setbacks have a way of affecting your confidence like nothing else, and confidence is crucial to a comeback. Confidence is the expectation you will succeed and is the power that propels you to a comeback. You have to restore your confidence, your courage, and your edge. People who make comebacks are people who have restored their confidence. Having confidence should come easier when you know the Bible is telling you that your god is going to win victory after victory and is always with you. You can base your confidence on the reality of who God is.' Earlier in the book McDaniel uses the example of a successful comeback as the resurrection of Jesus after his setback of crucifixion.

That Rick McDaniel is solid in his beliefs is apparent right form the start. For those who understand that this book is more about spirituality and psychology then it is a good read. For others, be informed that this is a book about religion. Grady Harp, April 12
