Book Description

This unique version includes the following annotations:

- Biographical details of the author
- Historical context of the book
- Literary notes
- Historical review of early theatre in Poland
- Theatre reportage by Henryk Sienkiewicz

The Comédienne draws on Nobel Prize winner, Wladyslav Reymont's, own experiences as an actor in a struggling provincial theatre at the fin de siecle, at time of massive social upheaval in Europe. Reymont depicts, in a slow burning tragedy, a young provincial Janina, the comédienne of the title, who joins a Warsaw theatre company and struggles toward what was then a very modern notion of personal freedom.

A ‘Comédienne’ also played drama and tragedy and the word in Polish had some connotation of a deceiver. As such, the title in Reymont’s day would have implied a somewhat darker novel that we might unwittingly expect today.

This edition has been completely re-edited and includes over 500 amendments, corrections and new translations to the orignal text. The introduction by Marianna Rychlowska includes a biography of Reymont as well as a fascinating historical review of the origins of early theatre in Poland, including rare reportage of Polish theatre by another Noble prize winner, Henryk Sienkiewicz. These valuable insights provide the contemporary reader with much of the commonly understood historical context that was assumed of the original audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Description - correction November 10, 2011
Format:Paperback
I notices that the review also appears under other editions however it only applies to the Onesuch Press edition (978-09871532410).

As per the introduction quoted at publisher's [...]

"The 1920 edition of this text has been re-edited to improve the reading experience. Errors in the text have been corrected, spelling has been updated (e.g. `gaiety' for `gaety'), unsuccessful neologisms replaced (`mechanic for mechanician') and clumsy idioms have been revised (`discarded' for `thrown into the discard'). The editing has been done lightly with an overriding concern that the original meaning be preserved, neither added to nor subtracted from."
