This exclusive collection from a producer of thousands of transcriptions of old-time radio features Amos and Andy, Abbott and Costello, Benny and Livingston, Burns and Allen, Harris and Fay, and many more. Also included are droll family shows spiked with witty repartee: The Aldrich Family, Ozzie and Harriet, The Life of Riley, and My Favorite Husband, where Lucille Ball first performed the character who went on to form the basis for I Love Lucy. Situation comedies are fewer here than variety shows with their medley of skits, songs, and chats with film stars such as Doris Day, Al Jolson, and Shelley Winters, among others. Sixty 30-minute episodes, three for each show, comprise this program. The recording samples the humor that millions in the United States and Canada loved from 1944 to 1945. Back then, audiences expected good acting but tolerated noisy men like Lou Costello and certain females who piped in little-girl voices. These performances still received applause, as did the smattering of bad puns and sexist gags. Aside from a few cheap shots, most of the material was good, crafted by talented writers and directors. Unfortunately in this collection, comprehensiveness dictates keeping in every advertisement (e.g., a cigarette "proven scientifically to cause less nose and throat irritation"). The sound is narrow in range but acceptable for speech. A fine accompanying booklet includes photographs and annotations of the shows. This an excellent collection from Radio Spirits, currently the best old-time radio distributors on the market. It is fun to revisit old favorites (like Fibber McGee, Great Gildersleeve), be introduced to new favorites (My Favorite Husband, the progenitor of I Love Lucy), and be wary of those that didn't impress me at all (The Aldrich Family, The Milton Berle Show).Having three shows each for all the 20 different programs is a wonderful way to sample and get a feel for a show without being inundated by any one particular program. On the other hand, collections like the one picked by Walter Cronkite only give you one broadcast upon which to form an opinion. But what was most interesting was the selection of shows themselves. I had only heard two specific broadcasts before and I've been listening for years. And where else can you find such nuggets as: 1. Pre-stardom Doris Day singing on the Bob Hope Show. Anyone who is into old radio comedies should get a kick out of this collection. Yes, it is near being prohibitively expensive (especially with many files available on Web sites or in trading groups), but for a collection of this magnitude, one can hardly go wrong.

This sampling of classic radio shows is pretty funny.
However, to get to the funny parts you will have to fast forward through REALLY LONG advertisements for tobacco, cigars and cigarettes.
