5.0 out of 5 stars And the survey says: THIS ROCKS! January 8, 2002
Format:Audio CD
I thought Barbe's playing days were over after Mercyland dissolved and Bob Mould's band Sugar (in which David played bass) called it quits. Turns out Barbe's been quietly writing and honing his studio skills in the interim and has become a very sought after and well-respected producer at his studio in Athens, GA...and man does it show! I got this CD soon after it's relase and have been absolutely enamored with it. A wonderfully produced collection of alt-rock gems with a raw, in-your-face 70's twist and a few really beautiful tempered tunes for good measure. "Nickel A Minute" and "Once In A While" rock likes theres no tomorrow, "If Here" is a laid back gem and a clinic in guitar tone and "Silver White Flash," "Medicine Takeover" and "Hot, But You Won't Blow" are ageless and melodic songs that seem to get better with every spin. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cracker, The Black Crowes, Pavement? No...David Barbe. Highly recommended !

5.0 out of 5 stars Georgia Singer/Songwriter Creates Awe-Inspiring Album December 24, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Those who are astute enough to have perked up at the songwriting gems offered by David Barbe's previous bands (Sugar, Buzz Hungry, Mercyland, and Burger Chief) are now being rewarded for being good listeners by the release of his new, brilliant CD. Here is a consummate songcrafter and arranger with ten of his best new songs which were, as rumor has it, produced over the course of three years.
The approaches and styles of the songs are varied and only a broad category such as "rock" really fits. Here is balance and patience and rare, rare talent. How about those traits as attention-grabbers in today's music world? Not as easy as yelling/whining or pouting/stripping, but most of those "performers" out there who borrow their antics from angry toddlers don't have a "Comet of the Season" to their credit.
File it under "rock" or "alternative country" or whatever, but do file an order for it. Music that will sound just as good 30 years from now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis has re-entered the building November 16, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Boy howdee, David's come a long, long way since driving Mercyland. I thought he was great then, but these songs show a depth and sensitivity that he never got to fully showcase in his other bands.
Nickel a Minute could be a hit on any radio station. Soft Distant Light; If Here; and Hot but you Won't blow are simply beautiful. In fact, all of the songs on Comet of the Season are as excellent as they are different. Further proof that Dave's songwriting talent is in a league with Elvis Costello's. The world needs to notice this record.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked cd January 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a fan of David Barbe since his Athens, GA days in Mercyland, and after his excellent work with Sugar, this solo disc is fantastic. Well worth buying. Enjoy it -- even if you have never heard of it before!
