Comets (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science Book)

Another good beginner science book. One problem with this particular edition says to look for Haley's comet in 1986. Well that has come and gone. So I wonder if the science in this book is out dated as well. Since I don't know about comets I will just go with it. My boy can get updated facts when he gets old enough to out grow this book.

Lots of information about what comets are, what they are made of, how they are made. Nice drawings to show the elliptical orbit and the way the tail changes when the comet gets close to the sun. This book is more scientific than some of the series but still not over the head of my 5 year old.

There is anecdotal info about Julius Caesar and Mark Twain seeing Haley's comet. And how people used to be superstitious when they spotted a comet. My boy calls that "In the old fashioned days". People didn't understand comets in the old fashioned days and they were afraid. They made up storied to explain what they saw.

I like the way this series takes ONE thing and writes about it. This helps young children focus on this one subject. It keeps his attention focused on it.
