5.0 out of 5 stars From The God Of All Comfort, November 23, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Comfort for Christians (Paperback)
Trials, affliction and suffering are all part of every believers lot in this life. How can the Christian derive comfort even in the midst of the deepest trials? In chapter 15 'affliction and glory' Mr.Pink referring to (2Cor.4:17 for our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.)writes "these words supply us with a reason we should not faint under trials... they teach us to look at the trials of the time in the light of eternity.they affirm that the present buffetings of the Christian excercise a beneficient effect on the inner man.If these truths were firmly grasped by faith they would mitigate much of the bitterness of our sorrows." If truly viewed in that light(that for the believer trials benefit them spiritually and are necessary for their spiritual maturity)then our attitude in the midst of trials and looking back on past trials will be transformed.
The authors insights and thoughts on contentment are invaluable. His definition of contentment is "being satisfied with the sovereign dispensations of God's providence."He observes that a coveteous spirit is a fatal hindrance to contentment and that contentment is the fruit of a heart resting in the Lord.
Some of the trials in this life for the believer are mourning over remaining sin and dealing with the cruelty and rejection of those who oppose the Lord and His people.
A.W.Pink was greatly used while he was alive to promote the Kingdom of God and has had even greater usefulness(through his writings after his death). If you read either of the two biographies on Pink's life(Born to write by Richard Belcher and The Life of A.W.Pink by Iain Murray)you will see that he was no stranger to exceedingly deep trials. In Murrays biography when England was under seige by Nazi Germany Mr.Pink and his wife Vera had to work(to prepare 'The Studies In The Scriptures' for publication)in the middle of the stairway, for it was the safest place to be in the midst of the bombing.
Comfort for Christians will be immensely valuable to Christians in the midst of trials and suffering of any kind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very deep, if a little dry, September 8, 2009
This review is from: Comfort for Christians (Paperback)
Arthur Walkington Pink (1886-1952) was an evangelist and theologian, who is remembered for his excellence in expository preaching. In this book, Rev. Pink combines seventeen essays containing spiritual comfort, or really instructions, for the committed Christian. Everything is covered from knowing that you are not under condemnation, through accepting that you are part of God's plan, that suffering is compensated for by God, and so forth.

This is a very nice and well researched piece of exposition of Christian concepts, and, really, advice - it's a great resource for walking the Christian walk in this veil of tears. I found this to be a very deep, if a little dry, work of Christian theology, which really gave me a great deal of food for thought.
