Take Comfort,
By A Customer
This review is from: Comfort (Audio CD)
Having followed Franke's career for over a couple of decades, I was still unprepared for the leap she's taken with this newest release, Comfort. From the opening track of David Olney's "Little Bit of Poison," I heard a Denice Franke I had not encountered before. It's an edgier side of Franke and she interprets the song with conviction. There is still much of the Franke we have known before on the album but I am enjoying the risks she has taken on this new CD. Producer Eric Taylor definitely knows what to do with Franke's voice and her songs. He keeps it simple in a very powerful way which is not an easy task. Taylor plays bass on most of the tracks (and even sings on the last track) and is joined by Lyle Lovett regulars Gene Elders, James Gilmer and John Hagen. Mike Sumler plays piano and organ. Tommy Elskes provides some amazing background vocals. And there's even a pedal steel guitar on "Friends Out There" played by Craig Holden. I once heard someone say of Franke, "She'll break your heart and put it back together again." Therein lies the Comfort.
