The guide is divided into three parts:
Part One, Getting Ready, reviews caregiving options at your disposal; discusses the financial and legal decisions you may encounter; shows how to set up a home in a safe and comfortable way for the person whose needs are changing and abilities are declining; and, perhaps most important, shows you how to better communicate with doctors, nurses, aides, pharmacists and HMOs to get what you need.
Part Two, Day By Day, guides you through every aspect of daily care. This care may be as basic as bathing or helping someone transfer from a chair to a bed, or as adventuresome as traveling abroad with a person whose health is declining. Throughout the guide, we offer tips that will be of assistance in dealing with Alzheimer's. We also devote a chapter to understanding the stages of the disease and how to communicate with a person who has it.
Part Three, Additional Resources, provides information about the medical specialists encountered as we age; de-mystifies medical abbreviations and jargon, and includes a glossary of terms used to describe and explain symptoms or conditions.
Because a picture is worth a thousand words, we frequently use illustrations throughout the guide. And we include references to helpful resources.
If "aging is not for sissies," then being a caregiver for the aging and those with special needs is not for the timid and fearful. However, knowledge will dispel your fear. With this guide in hand, you will understand what help is needed and where to find it or how to provide it yourself. Warm regards, Maria and Paula

Best reference for hands-on caregivers,
By
This review is from: The Comfort of Home: An Illustrated Step-by-Step Guide for Caregivers (Paperback)
I am the Director of The Waud Patient and Family Resource Center based out of Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. I am a nurse by career choice, and a caregiver by nature. I have provided home care and hospice care to a number of family members. I found this book useful to teach family members how to take care of someone at home. It has clear illustrations, step by step instructions for those tasks caregivers do every day, and a resource listing for those items that help make the job easier. It also has introductions to other areas of care which are very informative. This book empowers people without any healthcare education or experience to understand the mechanics of taking care of another person - no matter where they live. If you have family in a nursing home, this book will help you evaluate the care they receive. Both personally and professionally I would recommend this book to any person with a loved one who needs care.

"...a masterful job of presenting the multiple aspects of caregiving in a format that is both comprehensive and reader-friendly. The important focus on physical aspects of giving care are missing from many other publications in this category."

Excellent guide for Caregivers,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Comfort of Home: An Illustrated Step-by-Step Guide for Caregivers (Paperback)
The Comfort of Home is an excellent guide for caregivers and probably the most comprehensive in its approach that I have come across. It is very readable and organized in a way that makes it easy to reference. It covers all the basics including nutritional requirements for the elderly, daily activities, dealing with emergencies and illnesses, making the home safe, finances and legal concerns, avoiding burnout, and much more. Plus it has a lot of helpful illustrations, with special sections on Alzheimer's Disease. Very accessible for caregivers. Highly recommended.
