Book Description

10 and up5 and up
Now that Daddy has returned from fighting Hitler and Ann Fay is home from the polio hospital, life should get back to normal. But Ann Fay discovers she no longer fits easily into old friendships and Daddy has been traumatized by the war. Her family and social life are both falling apart. Ever responsible, she tries to fix things until she finally admits that she herself needs fixing. She travels to the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation, founded by Franklin D. Roosevelt, where she finds comfort, healing, and even a little romance. Although this invigorating experience does not solve all her problems, it does give Ann Fay a new view of herself. In this sequel to Blue, Ann Fay makes new friends, reevaluates old relationships, and discovers her unique place in the community.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6–9—At the conclusion of Blue (Boyds Mills, 2006), Ann Fay Honeycutt's daddy is just back from the war and Ann Fay is learning to deal with her polio. The continuation of this determined protagonist's story is even richer than the first installment. It is 1945, and life is anything but normal. Ann Fay, now 14, returns to school after missing a year, and even classmates who do not mock her cannot understand her struggles. Her father's moods fluctuate between apathy and rage. When Ann Fay gets the opportunity to travel to Franklin D. Roosevelt's Georgia Warm Springs Foundation, she is torn: her desire to enter a state-of-the-art polio facility is undercut by the nagging belief that her fragile family will not cope well with her absence. Finally persuaded, she leaves North Carolina and quickly learns to love the welcoming, supportive environment of Warm Springs. Romance blossoms, and she makes rapid gains in her mobility. Then Junior shows up unexpectedly with the news that her father is physically abusing her mother. He also professes his feelings for Ann Fay, and the two, once fast friends, are weighed down by a new awkwardness. While readers of Blue will be instantly drawn into this sequel, Comfort stands alone, and newcomers will find much to appreciate in Ann Fay's attempts to come to terms with the confusion around her. Hostetter's beautiful story about rebuilding, with absorbing back matter about post-traumatic stress disorder and disability rights, is exceptional historical fiction.—Kim Dare, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA

From Booklist

In this sequel to Blue (2006), Hostetter continues her WWII-era story about Ann Fay and the North Carolina teen’s efforts to recover from polio, which has left her physically challenged and emotionally vulnerable. Sadly, Ann Fay is not the only one now dealing with illness. Her father, newly returned from combat and suffering from postwar trauma, becomes angry and abusive. His worsening condition forces Ann Fay to interrupt the course of her therapy in Warm Springs, Georgia, to return home and help her family. The best part of Comfort is Hostetter’s loving depiction of life in the rural South in the 1940s. Less successful is her attempt to integrate factual material about Warm Springs, postwar trauma, and post-polio syndrome into a fictional context. As a result, the novel is too often didactic and, occasionally, preachy. Nevertheless, readers of the well-received Blue will welcome this new story about a close-knit community and a courageous protagonist. Grades 6-10. --Michael Cart

More About the Author

Joyce Moyer Hostetter grew up in rural North Carolina. After a brief struggle with Dick, Jane, and Sally in first grade she became an avid reader. Reading was a great way to find solitude in the midst of life with seven siblings. She also figured out if she wanted to get a word in edgewise she'd have to write it down!

Her middle grade Language Arts teacher told her she'd be a great writer some day so she began working hard to live up to that goal. However, she spent some years raising her two children, running a preschool, and teaching special education before turning to writing as a career.

She is now the author of four historical novels and has several in-progress. Her book BLUE about a North Carolina polio epidemic won the International Reading Association Children's Book Award in addition to other honors. The sequel, Comfort is now available. Healing Water, her book about Hawaii's leprosy settlement, is not nearly as depressing as it sounds!

Joyce has always loved history and she's crazy about research. She loves scrounging up some powerful hidden bit of history and sharing it with the world through compelling fiction. Although her novels are geared toward middle graders, they are widely enjoyed by adults as well.

Joyce speaks at schools, conferences, and conventions about her books and the history behind them. She also speaks about the writing process.

When she is not writing and speaking she's likely to be pulling weeds or planting flowers with the help of her husband and a grandchild or two. Or three. Or five.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, April 30, 2010
This review is from: Comfort (Hardcover)
After reading BLUE, I was not disappointed by the sequel, COMFORT.

The story of Ann Fay's continued recovery from polio and her devastation was incredibly inspiring. I have read stories about polio before, but this one was different because the disease affected the Honeycutt family so deeply.

Ann Fay's difficult choice is relatable with many people's stories today - the choice between caring for yourself and helping your family. When Ann Fay decides to go to Warm Springs, she is greeted by one of the most nourishing and wonderful experiences of her life.

My heart leaped as she began to get well. But soon after she begins to heal, she discovers that her family's happiness is in jeopardy. She must put her own wellness aside as she returns home.

COMFORT is filled with love and the longing for wellness, and the small, interesting bits make up a completely refreshing novel for older readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving story of one girl trying to overcome her ailments to better her life, July 7, 2009
This review is from: Comfort (Hardcover)
Polio is a challenge that many had to face, but it was just a small part of a bigger problem for Ann Fay. "Comfort" is a sequel to Joyce Moyer Hostetter's previous story about Ann Fay, 'Blue'. Troubled with flare-ups from her polio she finds that the available treatment for her disease will separate her from her family - who seem to need her more than ever. "Comfort" is a moving story of one girl trying to overcome her ailments to better her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expanding horizons, June 8, 2009

This review is from: Comfort (Hardcover)
Ann Fay's story in "Blue" told of the heartrendering effects of polio on one family. In "Comfort" our horizons expand to other problems faced by this family, other children with polio, and all girls as they become aware of themselves and the life around them. Hopefully, all the girls in my family will be introduced to the teen years in such a wholesome way.
