Editorial Reviews

Review

"Comfortably Unaware explains, so clearly, how what we choose to eat has a direct impact on the health of Planet Earth: how modern agro-business and our thoughtless appetites are, quite literally, destroying the environment and the future of our children. I urge you to read it, to think about its message, discuss it with your friends--and start to change the world, one bite, one meal, one diet at a time."

"As vegan diets gain popularity across the country for a way to improve health and the welfare of animals, it's no secret that the environmental effects of this diet can have a positive effect on our planet. Comfortably Unaware helps readers take a closer look at just this--how to heal the planet by changing what's on your plate. A health and environmental advocate for over 30 years, Dr. Oppenlander has long been inspiring change with his informative message. May his message inspire you."

Comfortably Unaware by Dr. Richard A. Oppenlander is a great book for anyone who wants to better understand the effect our eating habits have on the planet . . . If you care about our planet, and want to make a difference, this book is a must-read."

There are a number of reasons for moving into a Vegan Diet. Personally, I did it for health reasons motivated by Forks over Knives. However, once you get into the world of Veganism you find that it makes sense on a number of levels: Health, Health Care costs, Compassion for People, Compassion for Animals, Environmental impacts and personal spritual growth.

This book addresses the environmental impact of animal based diets. It s the elephant in the room. Changing light bulbs alone will not solve climate change. Switching to a vegan diet has a much bigger impact. Good read even if the enviornment was not your primary reason for going vegan.

I was waiting to buy this book in paper back, but I wish I had bought it sooner to share with more people! It is a very quick read but with hard information to take in. It points out how we have choices to make in what we eat that impact not only our health, but health of the planet. Even though some people may want to, it is hard to argue the points Dr. Oppenlander makes. I appreciate how he supports his statements with facts and first had experience. I was still eating dairy and a bit of fish here and there, but not after reading this! Thank you Dr. Oppenlander for making this information available to make more informed decisions. Not only do I highly recommend this book- I beg more people to read this to at least become more aware of what is going on in the world and understand the impact we have.

We read these worrisome predictions, warnings and stories in the newspapers EVERY DAY.

But it is SHOCKING to discover how much ALL these looming crises across the country and around the globe are all CONNECTED! Connected to a simple decision we each make every day:

WHAT to put on our plates
WHAT to put in our mouths

WHETHER we choose to eat animals or not eat animals

This book is JAM-PACKED with SO MUCH information it will make your head spin and make you want to jump on the roof and tell the whole world - ASAP!

THANK YOU, Dr. Oppenlander.

If you want to know why it's so HARD to persuade professionals and institutions to make these changes, check out Dr. Pam Popper's book on the Health Care crisis where you will learn a whole lot more about the FDA and its very powerful 'influence' (deathgrip) on the American diet from pediatricians to schools to hospitals, across the board, you just won't believe WHY they have SO MUCH power - and how poorly they use it.

From climate change (and the heat and storms that come with it) to pollution of our lakes, streams and rivers, to the depletion of our natural resources, including land, AIR, groundwater (and all freshwater) to dead zones in our oceans (150 and counting), over-fishing to the point of extinction, the list goes on and on.

Up to 50% of pigs carry swine flu (yes, that's why it has that name) and 96% if Tyson chickens carry at least one antibiotic resistant bacteria.

The biggest shock of all: Sustainability is a MYTH! Piece by piece, Oppenlander shows you why it's not true and will never be true as long as 1+1=2.

JUST DO IT!

After studying the food-health-environment-sustainability connection since 2002, I have concluded that Dr. Oppenlander knows more about that topic than anyone in the world. It's been his passion for forty years and, in this book, he provides a chilling summary of the "big picture" dilemma in which we find ourselves as a species. This book is all about global depletion and the ONLY viable way to reverse it---by replacing most of the world's animal-based calories with plant-based calories in the next few years. Sadly, the world's most prominent leaders are "comfortably unaware" of this world-changing information. My advice is BUY this book---READ this book---then get it in the hands of the most influential people you know. As Dr. T. Colin Campbell says, "No less than our future as a species hangs in the balance." J. Morris Hicks, author "Healthy Eating, Healthy World."

The message in this book is essential for us all to take note of and to act on. The future is in our hands and we ignore the power we have through food choices, at our peril.

A good and inspiring read.

I've known about the moral/ethical and health reasons for not consuming meat, but I had no idea how tremendous the environmental impact is. I have recommended this book to many of my friends already and will continue to do so. I think that every person has a responsibility to read this book. That said, I think that every person who reads this book has a responsibility to recommend it to their friends. I say RESPONSIBILITY because of the amount of irreparable damage that is being done to the earth (the loss of so many, possibly cancer curing, species of plants in the Amazon Rainforest alone...very sad). How can people be expected to take responsibility for their actions when they don't realize what the consequences of their actions are?

It is a very short and to the point book. His thoughts are very logical and delivered with nice style. You will not be disappointed (maybe a bit shocked and disturbed though).
