4.0 out of 5 stars Poetic license applied to the circumstances of death, December 4, 2007
This review is from: Comic Epitaphs From the Very Best Old Graveyards (Hardcover)
This is an amusing look at death via the humor on tombstones. Many are quite funny, and for some of them, you wonder if they are genuine. The opening of the book helps increase the ambiguity as there is the phrase, "Most of the items are genuine, but many are suspect, and a few are frankly contrived. In some cases genuine inscriptions have been somewhat altered; and the place names are not reliable." Quite frankly, I am not sure what that is supposed to mean, other than to make it clear that for any particular epitaph, it is possible that some poetic license has been exercised. Therefore, one should not be energized to explore the closest graveyard looking for a giggle or two.
However, if you approach your reading of this book in the right frame of mind, you will find them quite funny. Now instead of whistling past the graveyard, you may start giggling, if you remember some of the humor here that MAY have been etched in the most permanent of stones.
