Biography

--A life full of music. That’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age twenty-one, he was already considered a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to… Read more in Amazon's Ricky Skaggs Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Good old fashioned bluegrass!, July 25, 2008

I purchased this cd because it has the song "Thanks Again" on it which was played at my wedding, for my Parents, almost 20 years ago. I have had a hard time finding this cd so I was really happy to find it here. The cd is good and Risky Skaggs is a great singer/performer. The music is good old fashioned blue grass and reminds me of a simpler time. If you like bluegrass, then you will like this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional country album from 1988, June 30, 2005
This review is from: Comin Home to Stay (Audio CD)
Ricky's roots are in bluegrass, but he was not allowed to record bluegrass music while he was on a major label. During that period (the eighties and early nineties), Ricky recorded a series of traditional country albums, just occasionally hinting at bluegrass. This album is fairly typical of them, mixing original songs with covers of old country and bluegrass songs. The overall mood of the album is upbeat.

The covers include I'm tired (three co-writers include Mel Tillis and Ray Price), Hold whatcha got (Jimmy Martin), If you don't believe the bible (written by Carl Jackson and Glenn Sutton) and San Antonio Rose (Bob Willis). The latter track has a very long intro and a very long instrumental break in the middle, so the musicians get plenty of chance to show their skills.

The original songs include a superb duet with Sharon White (Mrs Skaggs) titled Home is wherever you are. Sharon can also be heard on some other tracks. Of course, if you really enjoy hearing Sharon, you should buy a Whites album. Another great original song (written by Paul Overstreet) is Old kind of love, which is about people being faithful to each other and families pulling together. I rather think the sentiments expressed in the song are wishful thinking although the world would be a better place if the song reflected reality.

This is a great Ricky Skaggs album although he was well past his commercial peak by then. If you enjoy Ricky's country music and want more than just the hits, do not overlook this album.
