This is a great story that I first read years ago and even today it still touches me in a deep and emotional way. Teens can easily relate to this book and adults will reminisce. This book is not for the timid reader. Ms. Hewett keeps it real as she tells an urban, modern day tale that will never grow old of first love, envy, discipline, making choices, and staying true to...

1.0 out of 5 stars "A total waste of time & money"
The novel "Coming of Age", written by a black 18 year old, tries to give an impression about white/black/light-black problems. It tries to use a black slang for the black characters. This ,however, is a total failure, because it isn't real slang, nor is it normal language. This makes the language boring.
The story isn't very interesting or complex: A black snob,...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Coming of Age Story, May 25, 2000
This review is from: Coming Of Age (Paperback)
This book is a wonderful, realistic portrayal of a young woman who comes to find out who she really is while managing to fall in love at the same time. I read this book when it was first published and it never fails to touch me when I pick it up now years later.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age- a nice youth novel, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Coming Of Age (Paperback)
We had to choose one book out of five ones to read at school. The class decided to read "Coming of Age" by Lorri Hewett, because the book deals with the real life and it is about youth and their daily problems. It is also about the development of becoming an adult, which makes the readers thinking about their lives and getting another view of life.

When we got the book, everybody was not very excited, but when we started reading the book, the class could not even stop reading. The easy language and the nice way the book is written makes the reader being interested in it.
There are different characters, which are described in their own views. The different views alternate permanently.
This makes reading funny and you can also see the differences between the people themselves and how they think about each other.

The 3 main- characters are AJ, Erika and Ruthie. At the beginning AJ and Erika have a relationship and by the time it changes. Ruthie and AJ get to know each other and their first opinions of themselves completely changed.
They started loving each other and because of that AJ and Ruthie got many problems with Erika.
In the whole book you can see their ways of becoming an
adult, their ways of changing their characters and also their ways of becoming successful.
You have to read it to get to know everything!!

All in all it is a nice book, because it is written in an easy way so you can understand it very well. It also deals with the daily and social problems of black people and makes the reader thinking about what life is really like.

We had much fun by reading it !!!

This book is wonderful. I read it in 1995 when I was 14 and have been trying to get my hands on it again ever since. This is a book that I would definitely recommend to young readers, especially those crossing the threshold into their teen years and early adulthood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, March 24, 2002
By
"July Lady" (MS United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coming Of Age (Paperback)
Coming of age is about Ruthie, AJ, and Erika. Ruthie is always accused of acting white, because she always hang out with the white crowd, since she can't relate with blacks. Aj is the star athlete, also tryin to raise his brother. Erika is his girlfriend, that is mixed. They go through the problems that all highschool students go through, fallin in love, teasing, and fighting. I really liked this book, it brought old highschool memories back. The only thing the author made to points about color complexes, and made all the light skin characthers really shallow, but that's happening in majority all book by black authors today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, January 30, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Coming Of Age (Paperback)
The story "Coming of age"takes place in Denver. It deals with social, racial and gang problems between different groups at a High School. There is also a developing love story between the two main characters Ruthie and Aj who come from a different social background. This fact makes the story even more interesting. It is a book that deals with a variety of problems. Although there is a lot of slang in it, it is not very difficult to read. Because of the slang you can imagine the emotional situation of the people very well and makes it more personal. Up to the end it is a thrilling story. I like Ruthie the most because she shows the most emotional feelings. Furthermore, I think she has got the strongest character.

4.0 out of 5 stars book review, January 30, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Coming Of Age (Paperback)
The book Coming of Age is mainly a good book. The story takes place in a Town called Denver! It describes problems between races and an other subject is hopeless love! It's an interesting book to read for teenagers of the age of 16 and older ! All in all a lot of slang, and on a Scale out of 10 I would rate it 8.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lisa and Nicole, students from Herne, Germany, January 30, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Coming Of Age (Paperback)
The book "Coming of age" by Lorri Hewett deals mainly with conflicts between the races. Without the book I'd never thought, there are such problems between dark and light skinned blacks. Another interesting fact for German students is the language. It's real life language and not like it is used in school books. The characters come from different social backgrounds and are representatives of different types of people. All these social facts are included in a nice story about first love and teenager's problems. So the book is interesting for everyone. Younger people, who like the story, students who talk about it in class or interested private readers who look behind the conflicts that are shown.
